I wouldn’t include Larry Bird who was recruited to Indiana, but you can throw in people like Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and a lot of NBA elites who never had any NCAAT success.
And you can have a team of future NBA players like your faves Huff, Hauser, and Murphy who lost to Ohio in the first round.
For a successful NCAAT run a team needs to have sufficient athleticism, a wealth of skill, tremendous execution of team concepts, and a bit of luck. Basketball is not just about who can jump the highest and run the fastest. This UVA team may not be elite athletes, and individuals may be inconsistent, but as a team they can compete at a very high level.

Lol. He’s 5’10”. He may pull more from outside, but mid-range and getting to the rim are never going to be huge parts of his offensive game. He has to use little-man playground techniques now when he goes inside.

I’m not saying they can or can’t, but they aren’t very battle tested. They really haven’t faced an elite team. I think they have only played 2 ranked teams.
I hope they prove me wrong, but I’ve soured lately on what I see as the ceiling for this team.
It’s a Tenacious D reference, but a bit over-stirred…especially for the audience. A weird choice.

This is what frustrates me the most about our schedule so far it’s been so weak and every time we play a team that might be good. They’re always missing somebody so it’s really hard to tell how good we can play against a top 20 team.
Heels only top 20 team we’ve played at full strength.
Basically only 2 ish chances at that before the madness

Forget about who recruited whom. But ask yourself: How many players on this team are among the Top 50 in the nation? How many are all-ACC? How many have an elite skill?
I consider Ugo an elite shot-blocker and Jacari (if this game turns out to be the norm) to be an elite shooter. TDR is a good player and probably will be all-ACC but we’re seeing the limitations of his game lately. The rest of the team are really solid role players, and Odom has done a great job fitting the pieces together and getting the most from them. I don’t think it’s insulting anyone to say we don’t have great players but we have a very good team that plays better than the sum of its parts. In that respect, it’s very much like a Bennett team.

Agree 100% with everything except the last sentence. Bennett’s best teams all had multiple NBA guys, and typically at least one or two upperclass NBA guys.

Chance may legitimately be top 50 in the country…. He’s pretty comfortably in EvanMiya’s top 50, even if you scale the possessions qualifier to the max…
Thijs is probably roughly a top 100 player. Him falling off a bit and Malik’s arrival being short lived are the primary issues. We probably need both of them to play at the top 100 level to make some more noise, and during this cold streak neither of them really have.
