Kenpom has it at 53% uva. Not far off
Boopie and Edwards are good scoring guards. Will be interesting to see if we can keep up the defensive effort.
Do think this is one where we have to beat them offensively. We shot well last time from three. It comes down to hitting 3P shots - could be a blowout if Sam and Jacari show up.
It looks like their bench is really poor outside of Toombs. But they don’t play much.
Both teams undefeated in Texas.
SMU isn’t really impressing me tonight. VT is shooting horribly and only down 1 at half
Yigitoglu has concrete blocks for feet. Sets a lot of Gortat screens though for Boopie and Edwards to skitter around. Boopie takes some crazy midrange shots.
I don’t think it will be that tough of an environment. SMU’s fan base isn’t great for basketball. I was at the game there last year and it wasn’t that hostile of an environment albeit we lost. And Boogie is pretty good.
I’m worried about going there on a win streak and SMU on a losing streak. Hope the Chokies show up here soon
180 from 10 mins ago.
SMU coming off of a miracle win, noon game, iffy home crowd, UVA with an extra day of rest, feel cautiously very good about this one.
Hoping the ponies have a little hangover from the buzzer beater for Saturday
I wonder what Cory is thinking right now
I can tell you exactly what Cory is thinking about right now. And you know it, too.
He’s thinking about Cory.
I don’t know a ton about SMU tbh. Aside from a Boopie explosion, what should we be worried about from them?
I’m on such a high from the Louisville win I’m not really worried about this one which is bad
They have a 7-2 dude who is solid and will cause us some trouble I think.
I would like to cordially extend him an invitation to the block party
I’d organize what they do on offense in order of frequency as:
- Transition: Very good at this; everyone gets involved here, but their guards (Boopie, Edwards, Pierre) most frequently.
- Perimeter drives: Boopie (especially) and Edwards are attacking with the ball, whether off of ball screens or isos. They are not a big drive and kick for 3s team (low 3P rate, especially in conference play), but they get buckets from Washington and Pierre cutting off of guards getting into the middle of the defense. Yigitoglu will try to clear out the rim protector with a Gortat screen, VT had to be active with switching once a SMU guard go into the paint to combat that.
- Pick and roll: Both Boopie and Edwards find Yigitoglu a lot off of ball screens.
- Mid-range: This is more of a subset of their perimeter drives and PnR but Miller, Edwards, and Pierre all will take these.
- Post-ups: Both Yigitoglu and Toombs get some touches here. This is not their most efficient offense but it is how they generate some of their 3s.
Edwards leads the ACC in steals. Boopie is third.
They give up a lot of open looks from three but I imagine the may look to provide more pressure on our guards.
High pressure seems to be the formula to disrupt us offensively and we don’t really punish teams at the line. Although their bench outside of Toombs is pretty poor and young.
The Turk is Top 5 in blocks per game.
Yigitoglu killed us last year but less worried about him this year
Really going to have to rebound well. Our guys are going to have to try and hold position because Tigitoglu seems pretty strong and our guys can get pushed out of the way from time to time.
Also going to need to make 3s I think, because SMU is likely going to score. They scored well in the last 4 games against solid/good teams, but so did the other teams. Seems like you have to rely on outscoring them to win, versus winning in a defensive battle. They haven’t had a game under 1.00 PPP this year, which is pretty impressive. We’ve only had 1.
Gotta think Jacari will heat up some as the rust comes off.
Toombs was someone Williford had interest in when he was here. If he wasn’t at SMU where they have deep bags and Jermaine O’Neal’s son wasn’t on the team (since pops is connected to local hoop scene), Tooms would be on audition watch
