The canonical example of this is a social psychology experiment where teens got assigned arbitrarily to be Team Paul Klee or Team Wassily Kandinsky and this was enough to get them to show in-group preference: Social Judgment Theory Experiment - Henry Tajfel

I couldn’t believe people booed Elijah Saunders. He was totally forgettable and probably not even invited back. I didn’t even know he played for Maryland until player intros. It was kind of hilarious that people were waiting for that moment

I read an article by the then outgoing restaurant critic for the NY Times where he said that he took his friends to official meals for his reviews fairly often. He would order and assign dishes to each person without any input on preferences or anything else from them, so his friends had no invested stake in what they were assigned to order. Even though all the dishes were generally shared by everyone, when he solicited comments, each person more often than not, would favor the dish they were told to order, even if it wasn’t a dish they would normally order and someone else ordered what they would have. I always found that phenomenon odd, but interesting.

The only guy that got it right last year was Warley. CTB is a legend but he didn’t handle the sudden retirement in the right way because he wanted to give Ron a shot. Which was a mistake. That put a bunch of players in a bad spot - play for Ron or transfer a week before the season. Warley got it right as much as I hate to say it.

When Bruce Pearce did the same this year to name his son the successor, it brought back memories. Last year was a throw-away season and I feel bad for the guys who played and had to endure it.

I have excluded Bliss from this because we never actually saw him play in a real game in college.

Interestingly, Stephen Pearl and Tahaad Pettiford seem to be having issues recently

but none of them had to? see: Bliss and Warley.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting we cheer for opposing players during the game. That would be bizarre. But when he first comes out on the floor for shootaround? Sure. And after the game as well, but only if he loses.

You’re going to buoy his spirits before the game when he’s trying to beat our team?

Oh, I see, some kind of reverse psychology guilt trip.

Naaaaah. It’s this! This is the move.

I think the Dai Dai talk is a little weird. He came to play for a coach and staff that isn’t here, coach left before season and he still balled for us then when staff left and new came in he went for his next opportunity.

Completely agree there’s 0 reason to actively cheer for an opposing player coming into our house trying to beat us, but is there really need to actively boo him either?

Just make it loud in JPJ and tough to play. No need to boo IMO.

Apparently, booing him only makes him more powerful.

I showered after dinner & took a 90 minute nap. Woke up about 30 minutes ago, ready for staying up late to watch the game. Realized it’s tomorrow. Oof
