🏀 Virginia vs Duke, L, 80-62, 13-13 (7-8 ACC), Monday, 17 February 2025, 2000, ESPN

Duke is a legit top 5 team in the country, and we’re…… not. We’re vastly improved over the last 2-3 weeks, and a lot of that is because of adjustments Ron has made. I’m not arguing he’s the long term answer, but shitting on him in this particular game when we’re playing a team that just beat Stanford (who beat us last month) by almost 40 is a little perplexing to me. What do you want the guy to do? Change the big rotations? Ok, maybe that helps a little. Stop switching? Ok, maybe they’ll change that at halftime, but switching is also a big reason why they’ve been playing better recently. Duke is just really freaking good, and they’ve got probably 3 first round picks playing. It’s just going to be a tough night. It is what it is.

How anyone can watch this game and decide our problem is our rotation — or our scheme — is just beyond me.

Our problem is that their players are much much much better than ours. It’s really that simple. Honestly, considering the vast talent difference, I think we’re battling hard and playing tough and acquitting ourself OK. Wish we were better at finishing at the rim, though.

George Mason on the road at Duke was more competitive in the first half

Play Zone?

And? What’s your point? Every top team has a sleep walk game. That means absolutely nothing.

Full court trap into zone. At least we’ll get the Boehiem seal of approval.

For the record, I’m not holding this game against Ron. Prime wooden couldn’t keep this competitive w the talent discrepancy.

I do think one has to be pretty blind to ignore poor substitution patterns and the passive standing around.

Why arent we punishing Cofie/Robinson on Proctor? Why arent we punishing their fronting?

There are 2nd half adjustments that need to be made regardless of talent. Lets see if they are made.

There are coaches out there who could do so much more with the current roster even with it’s shortcomings.

It’s not the losing by a lot that’s expected. It’s seeing how it unfolds

Damn it’s almost like people are gonna make observations and criticisms about the game they’re watching, especially when their team is losing by 14. It’s almost like there’s nuance in opinions, and how you can think that the team is playing hard in spite of an overwhelming challenge in front of them while also believing some adjustments could serve to give us a better chance of winning or at least competing.

Crazy how that works.

Lot of game left. I like the idea of Cofie and ARob together in the 2H. No more switching on D. No double the post. Straight up man.

Cofie can guard Flagg. ARob can handle their other big. I think Rohde has done a decent job when on Kon.

Keep trying the dunks at the rim. Need to get crowd going.

Let’s go Hoos. Be positive.

We got like 4 hours a week where we don’t have to talk about the next coach.

Lets go Hoooooooooooos!!!

Most of Dukes shot have been pretty damn easy because of offensive rebounds or switching onto a terrible matchup. Sure we’re incredibly overmatched but we’re also not making them work for anything.

If Ron coached his ass off this game we would lose 98 out of 100. But you’d like to see some improved line ups and individual rebounding. That’s my whole opinion on the game. Not an indictment but still room for coaching improvement.

Offense hasn’t been bad. 10-26 — while missing five shots within three feet of the rim (two missed dunks and two blown layups) — and 5-10 from three.

The difference is our effort, or lack thereof, on the defensive glass. They had 9 second-chance points in the first eight minutes of the game and 14 in the half! A lot better last 5 mins or so.

Two things can be true. I did not turn this game on expecting to win. Obviously, Duke is very talented. And also - the group on the floor doesn’t seem to be our best combo given what we’ve seen the last few games.

All that being said, we had flashes. Aside from giving them 3-5 shots on every possession, we’ve wasted too many of our own possessions taking high percentage shots and not finishing.

Rohde and Dai Dai playing great. Want to see iMac get some easier looks, he’s having to earn everything.

Cofie needs to go up stronger. Hope JWilly is telling him to attack the rim. He’s a beast out there. He needs to realize it himself. Go Hoos.

We can’t get into blocker mover because they are overplaying our movers. Throw some wrinkles into it. Duke does this every year.

I’d like to see us dial up that play where we throw it to an offensive lineman. They’ll never see it coming.
