Tony Elliott is a bottom 5 head coach. Change my mind,
Will try to play devil’s advocate:
We’ve got a lot of 1st and 2nd year guys getting PT on our two deep rn which does give some reason for optimism, and we’ve also been wrecked by injuries this season. Some of that admittedly could have been alleviated by recruiting better or doing more to fill gaps in the transfer portal, but overall we have talent that could be great with more experience and have seen glimpses of good scheming from our coordinators. There’s been a lot of close losses this year that could turn into wins next year hopefully given better luck with attrition and also guys being more prepared in end of game situations.
With all that being said I’m still of the opinion that if he doesn’t make a bowl game next year you have to seriously consider canning him, it would be five straight seasons of stagnation within our program if he doesn’t and I don’t think his recruiting efforts have shown enough to warrant anything extra. This program needs a jolt of life in the worst way and it’s looking like it’ll have to come from the product on the field, which will need to turn around sooner rather than later.
One thing I did notice about GT from the broadcast is the amount of transfers they’ve brought in from the SEC. They basically took a bunch of highly rated guys who were buried on the depth chart and pitched them on the promise of playing time, which is something that I really wish we’d do here as well. The difference in speed between their skill players and ours when going sideline to sideline was stark.
My thought too even had 1 Alabama kid
If Tony Elliott saved his job with the UNC victory, he might have lost it again with this game.
Really disappointing because you could sense some momentum over the last few weeks, even with the loss to Miami. But this was a massive step backward.
I think Elliott gets another year because a) three years seems a fair opportunity and two doesn’t; and b) there were enough moments this season where you thought maybe possibly we could be somewhere near the right track.
But I think it’s a very short leash, and I think a winning record would be the minimal expectation.
Soooooo….basketball season?
48 hours to go!
Yeah I felt this exact same way. I was really quick to think that the UNC game was a job-saver no matter what, but today put back nearly in the same spot I was before.
I’ll give them some benefit of the doubt today with the injuries that seemed non-ending, but that still doesn’t excuse a complete egg laying from the defense.
I think they’ve got to beat Tech to really make fans get on board with Elliott getting year three (which I don’t see how he doesn’t get that third season with a lot of pressure to get things turned around).
Best i could do…
Speaking of that, anyone else disappointed in the production of the RB from Clemson, Pace? While I wondered at the time why a “good” rb would choose to come here to run behind that line, I still held out hope that he was step above what we already had. Apparently not. He seems the least productive of the guys we use a lot.
