Ugo is hilarious though. But sounds like he really wants to shoot a lot of threes.
Ugo just said his threes tonight were the first of many. Love his confidence.
Ugoās praise of the coaching staff for basic stuff like supporting and encouraging him makes me wonder what the hell they did to him at k state
Iām not worried about Thomas. You can see his talent.
ACC Network has to ask guys to use FaceTime, apparently
Even with some of the miscues Thomas still had 11/3/3 tonight, helped that he made all his FTās.
I think heās gonna have quite a few games like that, feels like heās having a quiet night but you look up and heās got 15 points.
Virginia popped from 45 to 15 on the āway too early to even look at or talk aboutā preseason removed Torvik rankings
Non sequitur, but Vandy has broken 100 in both games
I was a little removed from the early first half because of some work deals but Malik got into some early foul trouble as well, correct?
Even if not, Iām still high on him. Doesnāt look disengaged when not scoring to me, which is big.
Just got in from the game:
-
Thomas was a bit of a black hole. The ball would go in to him and not come back out, and not go through the hoop either. He wonāt get away with that YOLO ball in conference play.
-
As said above, not a good night from the Belgian and German contingent. Johann will get pushed around in ACC games.
-
Coming out parties for Sam and Ugo.
-
Jacarmy is a thing and well deserved.
-
Chance is and will be the superstar. Eli still needs to find his role on the team.
-
This team would not have lost to Navy.
Thank you. Please continue talking amongst yourselves.
Iām not going to complain about 11 points on five shots ā and an EFG of 50%. Also not going to complain about his getting to the line three times and making all six from the stripe.
The three turnovers werenāt good, but he still had an assist:turnover ratio of 1:1.
Really good Ugo postgame + Sam
His on-off slightly ticked down to +58.7/100 possessions.
I probably need to double check this, but I donāt think Malik has made a field goal when Dallin is on the bench (has gotten to the line though, so he has scored).
Iām catching up and saw Hampton run a possession of Flex with everyone inside the arc and was befuddled, and then the announcers said their coach was a Cooley assistant, making it all make sense (the Al Skinner lineage).
Again no complaints from that one. 99 game score on Torvik- pretty good!
Different guys impacting the game on different nights - showing a lot of depth- which again speaks to a solid floor for the year.
11 3s, 17 stocks, and another game of really good pace and movement. Chance is a future star. Still believe Thomas is due for a breakout. Awesome moment for Ugo.
Complaining is silly. This is much better than last year.
Cracked the top 30 on Torvik! Letās keep it rolling
I donāt mind Malikās quiet night. If he is going to have 11 on perfect shooting, that is still an incredibly valuable player imo.
Iām so excited for later this season with Chance growing more (and in future years when he will be more of a focal point). Heās so fun and clearly going to be a difference maker.
Our front court is already awesome, if end of season Chance is as good as I think he can be and Malik shows up in earnest we can be a very very dangerous team.
Iāll ask againā¦.what did Jerome Tang do to this kid? KSU fans were laughing at us in the offseason and youād have thought he couldnāt put one foot in front of the other. Weāre getting the last laugh
This was a great tune-up game. 50 points from the bench. 50% shooting from deep. 18 points from Ugo in 18 minutes. Making free throws (14/17 from the line) including both Thomas (6/6) and Mallory (6/6) perfect. Chance Mallory played with passion and physicality. Hall is settling into his floor general role and not forcing things. The defense was far more aggressive. Lewis played his best game yet and was far less passive. And they played hard for all 40 minutes.
All that despite a quiet night from our Europeans.
The bad stuff:
(1) Three games into the season, and Thomas, who should be an offensive cornerstone, is still lost. And it isnāt the step up in competition: heās struggling against the kinds of teams he beat in San Francisco. Is adapting to playing a lower volume role-player role that hard? And his defense? Ouch. He does seem to be adapting, though: his shot wasnāt dropping so he attacked and got to the line, and made his free throws.
(2) Poor Elijah still looks rusty, but more concerning is his lack of shooting. Heās getting a ton of minutes to work out the kinks, but heās going to be buried on the bench in real games.
(3) The bench isnāt quite as deep as we expected. Eight players (5 starters plus Ugo, Chance, and White) look like they belong. Then youāve got Elijah and Carrere. Tillis will return, but frankly he looked out-of-shape before surgery and Iām not sure how well he fits.
Near the end here, Ugo says that he showed he could shoot at K-State (he said he didnāt really at Kentucky) but the coaches didnāt want him doing that:
The question of āJerome Tang, wyd?ā continues.
True. I was a little harsh. He probably wouldnāt try the hero ball against better teams. Itās just so glaring compared to the rest of the offense and Odum (even in the post-game) keeps emphasizing āWe share the ball.ā I do remember at least one pass Malik made in the second half.
