There are no true must-wins until the ACC-T, but this one is as close as it gets.
Our Feb/Mar schedule is much tougher (Kenny Pompoms** has us at 5-5 in Feb/Mar), so we need to get fat on these 8 January games:
- Lville
- @NCSt
- @Wake
- VPI
- @GT
- NCSU
- @Lville
- ND
I think 6-2 still has us set up for a 9 or 10-seed or so***, assuming a “par” stretch run. That means win the gimmes (Lville/ND at JPJ), t.c.o.b. @Lville and @GT, and try for a split of the Tobacco Road roadies and the VPI/NCSt home games (2-2 in those 4). (Or whatever adds up to 6-2). Oh, and try not to get blown out.

*** This is very hack-ish bracketology. I think I’m safer at 6-2 keeps us firmly on at least the bubble, with decent to good odds. Hard to get too specific this far out. Key is racking up W’s and not losing to bad teams and not getting blown out. Barring that, how about, don’t let bad teams blow you out? (That’s not good)
Did you say gimme for this team???
Yes, those are gimmes at home. You can lose a “gimme” (which is implicit in what I wrote).

I think its still Will vs.Skill with this team. The skill will come along and improve - is the will there to do what’s needed to fight through adversity and go outside of a players comfort zone? Have not seen it consistently and need to break through that in order to be a top tier ACC team this year.
Totally agree. Three blowouts where we looked like we had no ideas on how to come back is not ideal…
You guys call it a must win and i know this is the same thing but i call it a can’t lose . If we do we are in deep shit
And i don’t know what to expect from this team
I said this in another thread but really hope our guys have a “let’s win this thing” mentality tomorrow instead of a “we can’t lose this” mentality.
Fans can have whatever mentality they want, though.
We’re gonna beat the piss out of them as they’re going to turn it over like crazy. We will feel a lot better as a fanbase. But the truth is it won’t matter because we won’t know if the team has turned the page until it faces some real adversity again (maybe NCSU)
This is more Coppin St. 2.0
Yeah, and maybe not even real adversity. I mean, we’ve looked like totally different teams against good and bad opponents alike. Just total variability.
If we see us have a solid performance in 3-4 games in a row, I’ll begin to feel better. Until then, on edge.
As Erik Haslam notes, we are dead last for performance consistency. We are the Jekyll & Hyde team.
I agree about it not mattering but at the very least we need a confidence boost. Beating an ACC team no matter how bad they are would hopefully get the guys believing again. Time to reset. It starts by beating Louisville and then we go from there

Finally got our boys back. Time to right the ship.
More of the same of never being the same. Got it.
