Rohde at 6’6” is the most height we’ve had at the 3 spot in awhile. His defense has been solid and gives us a lot more flexibility rotation wise with his aforementioned height and ability to handle the ball.

He hasn’t been efficient offensively. I think expectations should be lowered in that regard. From what I saw in St Thomas, he generated a lot of drives heading downhill. He doesn’t have the first step quickness to beat guys from our offense.

To @haney’s point, I’m not sure who you play over him. And I think there are roster height/defensive concerns without him in the roster - he’ll continue to play regardless of offense.

Also @Jerome it is amazing how such a short layoff can actually hurt you. Tough to get your wind in the game etc for thaf first “quarter” as @WFS_HOO broke down

I said pregame that for example iMac probly wished the past 3 games that the game would never end. No timeouts no breaks no halftimes. Just keep watching his 3 go in

Exam breaks are a strange thing. Guys are spending lotta time with tutors getting ready for exams etc.

This game for me is a one off BUT I am not sure going to Memphis for our first true away test is ideal. We shall see

Only 5 offensive possessions on the season; those came in the Wisconsin-WVU-TAMU stretch.

Thanks - I gotta get back in the hoop explorer habit… I think I posted during the game, but when we switched Dunn onto Doherty, I thought that coulda been a good moment to put in Bond, but nope.

To demonstrate what a terrible coaching decision it was not to take Rohde out of the game and reallocate his minutes elsewhere after it was clear he wasn’t “giving us buckets” I present to you clear evidence that he should have been removed from the game, in the form of the play-by-play transcript from the second half, starting at our biggest deficit of the half at 17:57 (37-24 bad guys), and concluding with our retaking the lead at 7:01 (44-45 good guys leading).

If the point is he had a lot of assists, I’m pretty sure I said it was good he had a lot of assists, but if I forgot to say that, let me say it now - it was good he had a lot of assists.

The point is when did you want his minutes reduced? Before or after or during the stretch where he accounted for the majority of our offense from our worst deficit to our regaining the lead. Hell, even though he missed 2 3s in that stretch (which I would have preferred he make), he was still the guy getting the shot.

Just rewatched all of them – the two to Bond were really awesome plays. He drew the defense and dished. The Beeks one was just a pass. The two setting up iMac threes were nice/fine workman-like passes in the flow of the offense.

Rohde is a great piece to have. We have other great pieces, too, and putting them together is gonna be a tough but hopefully rewarding task for Tony.

This reminds me of the heavy discussion last Spring when we were all debating whether Rohde was a great 3-pt shooter who finally found his mark or whether he was an average or below average shooter who was on an 11-game heater at the end of last season. He shot 26% in his first 20 games last year and 42% in his last 11. Is he Justin Anderson (2 month tear his JR year), Armaan (comes and goes), or still just a guy adjusting to a new team? But if he can’t hit open 3’s, we’re not gonna see our best version. If teams are clamping down on IMac, others have to step up. Groves, Rohde, and Dunn all are getting open 3’s.

Honestly, put these two plays on repeat and you’ll feel much better about the potential of our offense (at least I did)

As long as he shoots 42 percent going forward we good!

The way I’m thinking about it is 35% 3P% is the cut off, which is what Rohde was shooting prior to Saturday. 35% is 1.05 ppp, making it about an average possession for our offense, which should be fine considering most of these shots wouldn’t be the primary option we are trying to get.

Right now only Groves is above that line, but frankly his 3P% is heavily boosted by the 1st 3 games where he went 7/9. He’s only 4/19 (21%) since.

Dunn and Reece are nowhere close. Reece is especially disappointing in this respect. Dunn just doesn’t have it I think.

Rohde is the only one close (counting only guys with some volume).

I’m excluding iMac because his 3 point shot is clearly option A.

Edit: Now i’m a little depressed.

Agreed. Rhode has been very good defensively. His passing has been superb, great court vision, and consistently among the best distributors on the floor.

It seems that critics only remark upon his shooting—as if expecting him to come in and be Sam Hauser—and while this aspect of his game has been disappointing, it will come along.

Fair

For the sake of his draft position, Reece should focus on demonstrating his skill in the midrange and at the rim, rather than demonstrating his below average skill from three. Hes going in the wrong direction on that metric.

Similar for Dunn, except more so. Do what you’re good at!

I mean I just cannot get over the 3 air ball FTs. are we the first d1 team ever to do that?

Nailed it. And what wins us more games

Admittedly stating the obvious and somewhat repetitive of other comments, we have to make other teams pay for putting their best defender on, or double teaming, IMac. That’s what Northeastern did and it worked well for most of the game. Other teams will continue this strategy as long as it keeps working.

I’m quite sure the coaching staff is well aware of this. If no other player is reliable from the three point line, we need other plays to exploit this focus.

We have some core dudes that cannot create for themselves when facing hard nosed and physical man defense. Beeks can go get a bucket under duress with some expectation of converting but it does not seem that IMac (still developing?), Rohde (minus-athleticism for scoring guard), Dunn (no mid-range game, loose handle) can do this consistently … that’s a lot of our minutes … other coaches who have the defensive pieces see this and the plan is obvious.
