What it could be is that Tony isnât a particularly good tournament coach. His teams that did well (like the championship) had strong player leaders who had the power to make decisions on their own sometimes.
I personally think Ty and Kyle and Dre, for example, made some of their own decisions that maybe werenât quite what Tony was calling for, so to some degree they overcame Tonyâs tournament tendencies (and in fairness were empowered by Tony to do so).
Teams that donât have strong player floor leadership under Tony have done terribly in tournament play. But maybe thatâs just a general benefit of player leadership and separate from Tonyâs issues.
Does anyone have numbers on how many open jump shots we missed? I know there are a lot of comments about system or flow but it felt watching the game that these guys could have been playing for Nate Oats or running UNC secondary break all game long and you still wouldnât have seen them eclipse 50.
I hope the system improves but man these kids had some wide open or high quality looks last night where all thatâs left is on the player to do their job.
IMac was awful - 2 for 13 - and most were wide open. Beekman - 4 for 16 - was even worse. When your 2 best offensive players canât hit the broadside of a barn when it matters. Have to ask ⌠why?
No we were the best or 2nd best team that season (Duke). We were one of the best the season before that one and our best player got hurt. Weâve had other good tournaments besides the championship run. The Sweet 16 and Elite 8 teams were great and lost really close games. All of those teams were filled with future NBA talent. Just need to keep reloading year after year unless Tony has the stomach for a full reset where we take like 6 or 7 high school recruits but that path doesnât make sense to me
The annoying stats nerd answer is that the game-to-game variability (variance?) in shooting outcomes increases the further the shots get away from the basket, so extreme outcomes in both directions are more likely with jump shots.
Edit: For example, this is the graph of 3pt% by game of the best 3pt% team in the country:
I donât have numbers but felt to me like we almost never had good looks. We shot poorly on our âkinda decentâ looks (Jake rushed threes, Reece fadeaways in the lane) but mostly we just werenât generating anything. No numbers here tho, just my faulty memory
LOL clearly itâs a bit/riling up emotions (he does this for all teams, even Duke and UNC shitting on them lol). But some okay commentary on the pack line
Itâs that guyâs entire shtick. Heâs got a bunch of clickbait titles calling out HOF NBA coaches like Kerr and Spo for apparently being idiots lol. Some good insights in his nitpicking though.
My dad was persistent the whole past week getting into the NIT would probably be better for the program. Sadly, he was right. Or maybe not, perhaps we would have scored 50 in a ten point loss to Princeton or something.
Open letter to the board and not sure how many times Iâve gotta say this. In-game me is a crazy, far less level headed me, and he canât be taken seriously.
Just chiming in because I think Iâve seen you ask about variability/variance a couple times. In a non-technical sense they can probably used interchangeably?. Variance formal mathematical definition that measures deviation from the mean, and you can obtain standard deviations by taking the square root of the variance.
I figured weâd already been blown out a bunch, whatâs one more. Plus weâd be underdogs for once.
Failed to take into account a) play in game is against the same seed and b) this would be the ONLY tourney game on at the time. Just made things so embarrassing but as far as recruiting I really doubt last night had much of an impact. Theyâre already hearing it and have been for years
The âwhy would you want to play at Virginia with that pace and offense?â criticism directed toward recruits always rang hollow when we were scoring 60 points and beating good teams by ten⌠but it feels more potent when weâre scoring 42 and losing by 25.
My pastor (UNC fan) texted me during that drought asking what was going onâŚnot kidding. I was also texting with my brother so I had to be extra careful about who I was texting. The exchange with my brother was a little more colorful.
Yeah, I got a ton of random texts from people I only hear from a few times a year. Always nice to have your team suffer a bad loss to reconnect with old friends.
