2021/2022 Basketball Pre-Season Chat

Yeah, but the org chart think so, and you gotta obey the org chart gods. (This is a joke)

But on a serious note: does Tony answer to Carla in any meaningful way? Doubtful, but you gotta play ball within the institution and I suspect Tony does that well enough. (Which is your point, I think)

As most would suspect…The AD is a facilitator to giving the coaches what they need… I suspect that is especially the case with our coaches that have rings…

The piece no one can explain is why FSU and NC State and Notre Dame can figure out how to stream their scrimmages but UVA can’t. It’s not like UVA is some behind the times place that has way lesser technological capabilities than other ACC programs. It’s also not like other ACC programs lack fall sports. Does our athletic department just care less about our fans? Take our fans for granted?

Yea worded my post wrong up there. Was just trying to get at that I don’t think Tony is the one blocking the stream. Seems more athletic director territory than coach territory.

Especially since we’ve done it in the past (the year we won the natty). Definitely think it’s on Carla.

If I remember right, the stream was done over ESPN. Not sure if that matters to the discussion.

I remember when we played at JMU they had their own streaming service set up. Do we have like a uva tv platform? Or does ACC Network + fill that?

I know harping on this might get old, but for some of these questions, couldn’t an intrepid local reporter ask? If Bach won’t give you Tony, ask Bach. If Bach stonewalls you, write up on Twitter that Bach stonewalled you. Do some reporting, it’s not illegal. I know we ran Blum out of town because he tried to do some journalism, but so far as I know, it’s not illegal yet.

My other fear is that it’s not that important to Tony or Carla because the numbers weren’t that good and uva fans generally don’t care that much about this. If so, shame on them.

I suspect like HGN alluded to, we have to do it pursuant to some sort of espn contract. But I can’t imagine they’re the bottleneck here. The internet is a series of pipes and espn has plenty.

Just watched about 4 minutes of the Duke scrimmage and that’s more UVa hoops than I’ll see until Navy. All of my message board posts won’t change a thing, of course, but this is just annoying isn’t it? That’s all I’m saying.

That said, I reserve the right to post about this again, just in case.

Other schools do it on ACCNX

Nah there is no right or wrong way to look at it. I just wanted to be an ass and say TB owns Cville right now and am sure can do whatever he sees is right

In the Goodman podcast he talked about his dad being faithful to what he knew was right as a coach (something like that). Also, dont forget, these dudes are superstitious as well. TB always wins (in season) never wears orange. Shit maybe he had a horrible Halloween as a kid or something

Didn’t they have to end the scrimmage early the last year they broadcasted it because someone took a nasty fall/head injury? Not that it matters that much and it could happen of course with any non-broadcasted scrimmage or practice, but I wonder if that memory lingers a little.

Don’t even have to stream it. Just record it and post it later on YouTube channel.

I’m going with Ockham’s razor here and concluding that it’s very likely Tony’s decision (with input from the assistant coaches and maybe the upperclassmen) to stream the scrimmage or not. I think he probably wants it to be a fun, non-pressure environment for the players and the attending fans. In 2019, he had a a veteran team returning who wanted the spotlight of the previous year’s disastrous ending shining on them, so they streamed it. In subsequent and previous years, he didn’t want to. I suspect with this year’s very new team, they will stick with no streaming regardless of our complaints.

quibbles:

  1. I’m the world’s foremost expert in playing hoops in fun, no pressure environments (it’s the only environment I’ve ever played hoops), so I’m with that conceptually. If our players want advice on that, hit me up! But they signed up to play ACC hoops for a top ten caliber team, so color me skeptical that they are interested in my advice on that front.
  2. Not following why local fans = fun / no pressure, but nonlocal fans on a stream (or tape delay) = no fun / lots of pressure. One reason I care about this is this has always felt like a thumb in the eye to nonlocal fans (I.e., me).

I personally would watch every second but dont feel is my right to see it (unless I was in Cville and at JPJ) so no big deal for me. But I also understand how we see other teams showing what they having going on and wish we were there as well
