2021-22 Season Look Ahead

Nice. I’m from the next town up. Culpepper v warrenton is a rivalry to rival hokie high vs uva. I’ll let you guess which is which (hint: lots of cows in culpepper)

Let the magic continue… Wisconsin & Virginia are tied in a coincidence…

All I know is Culpeper has Mister Jennings and like 6 exits off of 29.

I grew up in Culpeper. Not too much to it. I was so happy to get out. Played football and baseball in high school. My junior year football head coach was Waverly Brooks. The next year he left to be an assistant to Sonny Randle. Yeah, giving my age away. Man did I love Coach Brooks. He knew his shit and how to motivate people.

My wife and I were in Culpeper in late April and went into the local history museum. They had a big display on Mister Jennings right inside the door. We asked the young woman at the desk if she knew where Mister is now. Her response? “No clue.” Well alrighty then. Wherever he is, I hope he’s enjoying his post-hoop life. He was fun to watch.

He coaches a womens college team I think. I texted with him last year seeing if he would come on a pod. Great guy who everyone seems to love.

East Tennessee coach Les Robinson came to my living room and said “you can come to ETSU if you want but we think youre too good and Mister is gonna start anyway” so… no Escalade for Fresh

Was at that root canal as well. The highlight of the day was seeing the banner and trophy for the first time…certainly not the game.

Mister Jennings came up randomly on a recent Parrish/Norlander podcast. I can’t remember the context.

Never knew he was local, just remembered him as the short guy from ETSU.

He had a real pro career. Is he taller than our PG?

How real do you think Kihei’s listed height of 5’9” is?

Fresh probably has in person insight but Trey and Sam’s UVA heights lined up with their NBA combine in shoes heights. I’d bet Kihei is actually 5’9 with shoes. So that’d make him what, 5’7.5 barefoot?

I never understood the whole height in shoes deal…since basketball is played in shoes shouldn’t players be measured that way…

Maybe to prevent some gamesmanship at the combine? Like dudes might have started rolling up with six inch high tops making measurements worthless

I listened to that game on the radio on a five hour Megabus trip. It was… unpleasant.

But the important thing (in terms of why we even care about their height) is how tall are the players relative to one another, not like how tall are they relative to the hoop. And measuring in shoes means guys are getting their heights measured differently from one another, because the shoes aren’t all consistent. Just adds a weird variable that makes it hard to know how tall the players are relative to one another. If they all were just measured with no shoes, it’d be easy.

6 inch hi-tops… that’s a bit dramatic and would get nothing but snickers from the people running the combine…

My potentially hot takes for next year:

  • Murray gets 15-20 minutes a game and is our highest scoring freshman since Guy. In fact, I see him having a similar freshman season to Guy but with better 2pt% and lower 3pt% (Guy shot 48% from 3 his freshman year, my goodness!)

  • Shedrick starts game 1 and pushes for ACC DPOY

  • Gardner stretches his range and takes 2 three pointers a game, much to the chagrin of the fanbase. But the rest of his game and especially his energy makes him an immediate crowd favorite.

Those takes may not even be that hot, but that’s what I’m going with. Anyone got any other takes they want to get off their mind?

I don’t think any of your takes are necessarily scorchers. I expect gardener to take threes and if he can hit them it will help his and our offense immensely. It seems that a lot of his action relies upon taking guys off the dribble from near the three point line. If he forces people to guard him out there, it makes his drives to the hoop all the more effective.

1 and 3 are reasonable. 2 is a scorcher based off the historic developmental curve of our bigs. I just hope Kadin can stay out of foul trouble enough to give us 20-25 minutes a night.

I think there’s a roughly 75% chance shedrick is ACCPOY this season. Dude is going to take over. No doubt in my mind. Only question is whether he gets screwed out of the award because they give it to Coach K’s grandson.
