Yeah, seeding + banner still in play.
I would assume Abbott is done for the weekend after today so you try to get as many innings from him as possible to save then pen even if this gets more lopsided.
Loving this late season momentum!
Who is the British sounding commentator on the broadcast?
Peter moylan
Complete opposite weather from the lacrosse team for the baseball team…
We’re at the point now that everyone is following their normal weekly routine/schedule. There’s no harm in using them. And we do still want to keep people fresh with games to play at the end of next week.
We aren’t going to abuse an arm to get a win at this point like some coaches across the landscape would do. But we aren’t going to keep anyone in bubble wrap now either if they’re healthy and rested.
Abbott is the only guy you’d rule out for the weekend at this point.
Duke won 4 to 2 today to eliminate the Hoos from the ACC Tournament.
Three solo homers for Duke, including one to begin the game, was the difference.
The selection show is Monday at noon on ESPN2.
We’re somewhere on the line between a regional 2 and 3 seed. I’m leaning 3, but I could see us having done enough to maybe grab one of the lower 2 seeds.
So South Carolina is the regional host but only the two seed in the region?
For COVID health & protocol reasons, I think they had a pool of 20 possible regional sites. ODU did not bid for one of the possible sites.
The super-regionals will be chosen from the 16 regional sites.
Edit: @Wahoo08 has the more complete response.
yeah, traditionally there have been occasional instances where a 2-seed serves as the host, usually because a deserving 1-seed doesn’t have acceptable facilities or couldn’t host (i.e., duke would have to host at the Durham Bulls stadium, so it has to mesh with their schedule).
this year it was more likely b/c the NCAA required COVID screening facilities that had to be pre-planned, so they narrowed a list of 20 host sites about a month ago. ODU, the 1-seed in our region, did not bid as they were “unable” (whatever that means) to support the requirements, so it became clear that if they were a 1-seed (which they absolutely earned), a local-ish 2-seed would get to host.
That inning was a tough one, time to bounce back
The 2010 tourney was the last time it happened.
FSU was the 1 seed but the games were played in Norwich, CT with regional 2 seed UCONN as the nominal home team.
Yeah, that was not ideal.
UVA lost to South Carolina 4 to 3 today.
South Carolina took a 1 to 0 lead as Virginia native Wes Clarke homered in Top 1 off of Abbott. Abbott proceeded to retire the next 10 Gamecock batters.
UVA took a 2 to 1 lead after Jake and Zack Gelof hit solo homers. The Hoos pushed it to a 3 to 1 lead on a fielding error by the South Carolina 1B on a Zack Gelof grounder that allowed Jake Gelof to score from 3rd with 2 outs.
Back to back ground rule doubles and a single scored 3 runs for South Carolina in the 6th. The ground rule doubles came off of Abbott. The single was off of reliever Kyle Whitten. The entire rally happened with 2 outs.
Zach Messinger came in for Whitten to finish the inning and ultimately the game without further damage.
Unfortunately, UVA wasn’t able to respond with another rally of their own.
Up next is the loser of Old Dominion and Jacksonville in an elimination game tomorrow at noon. ODU and Jacksonville are scheduled to play at 7:00 tonight.
VS Jacksonville at noon on ESPNU today.
They lost to ODU by an identical 4 to 3 score last night. JU scored their 3 runs in Top 1.
Mike Vasil is getting the start for the Hoos.
