2021 recruiting reset

Well that’s not encouraging

Shouldn’t be all that surprised, HGN said as much the other day. I’m personally kinda over that recruitment. If he thinks he’s better off at UM or OSU, have at it.

Corey doesn’t mention that we already have Caffaro and Shedrick on roster too.

In terms of recruitment rumors, information again changes faster than it spreads and who knows what the sources are what the real information is. Nova might very well get keels but Kentucky fans were adamant they were getting Haarms the day before he committed to BYU.

From my experience last year with someone in Reid’s camp, it didn’t seem like we were ever really going to be a serious contender. The Virginia offer was mentioned but in the context of a stepping stone for other offers (Duke, UK).

That was a year ago, but seems consistent with what we’re seeing. The Duke / UK offers haven’t materialized but I think he goes somewhere where he’s made the focal point or has a quicker professional path.

Corey is crazy good at his job. I try to cover Virginia recruiting, that’s it, and it’s still been hard to figure out. He has to do it freaking nationally. People don’t realize. I think most fans assume these magical sources just whisper the full story in his ear. It’s more like subtle hints or puzzle pieces with missing gaps for each one.

This is a very good summation. It is hard to not take things personally when kids (in-state!!!) treat a Virginia offer like that. Reid was THE focal point of recruiting last year and it always seemed as UVA was that “stepping stone” you mentioned. Now, that may not be 100% accurate, but certainly jibes with things I’ve seen from the other side. Bennett will get a great player but still frustrating.

Let’s see how it works out. We still don’t know where and how much Shedrick is going to play in 2021. The coaching staff apparent shift to prioritizing a 4 for 21 means that they may be looking at both Caffaro and Shedrick at 5 that year.

Definitely was the attitude early on but that’s how most kids feel, all about getting the trophies. Bennett read it well too. If you go back, I think the last time he saw Efton was in Nov or Dec. He made a lot of recruiting trips after that, even for Furst once. Doesn’t mean they didn’t believe they could get him, it was more that landing him early wasn’t going to happen. Pushing before they’re ready is counter productive.

Then there was the reclass stuff and the ensuing drama, still in progress to an extent… I think both sides felt a little miffed over that. UVA expected him to stay in 2021 100%, and Reid assumed he could go to UVA anytime. He could probably still pick UVA if wanted, but I’m not totally sure about that. He’s been in that bonus 3rd spot category and there’s other stuff in motion. Honestly, everything is in motion right now.

Yeah I don’t get his recruitment at all. The move to IMG post grad doesn’t make a lot of sense, and he’d be better off going 2020 it seems. At some point schools are going to move on and it’ll be a last man standing scenario for him. Best of luck, but he struggled in Feb and March against inferior competition. I think he and his camp are overlooking the amount of development he needs to be a high level player (and NBA prospect). I don’t know if he’s ready to produce within his first two years on a campus.

Find it odd Michigan is selling him on playing with Dickinson, when they played for Takeover together, Reid didn’t get a ton of run for them on the Nike circuit, granted Howard may find a way.

I’m huge on Shedrick and think Papi will become a great role player down the road. I’ve heard Shedrick has an “elite level” jump hook, a la Akil, and the potential to be one of our go-to guys down the line. Obviously Reid is a talented player, but I doubt he’d be taking any minutes from either of those two in their years of overlap

Keels may be special but I’ve bought in to Bennett’s recruiting. He doesn’t seem to really twist anyone’s arm or oversell his program. I really appreciate that and ultimately it shows in the overwhelming pride and love for UVA and the program from former players.

I remember Coach Bennett made a comment in which he related recruiting to dating. With that being said, I have noticed a trend of mutual movement and intensity prior to a commitment. However, recruits who linger with a decision or play things out do not end up here nor do I think we want someone to commit who hasn’t fully bought in nor recognizes what a blessing and opportunity it would be to play in Coach Bennett’s program.

With all of that being said, that’s why I do not expect Keels or Reid to commit here. With Warley things seem to be heating up and there seems to be a legitimate mutual relationship. However, I also thought that if Christie had waited things out and possibly visited UVA, we would have been in his top two at minimum. However, Izzy offered his younger brother and shortly after he committed to MSU.

I think there are a lot of assumptions here about the players. We don’t know whats actually going on with these situations. I think Tony has the information he needs, regardless of whether us fan do or not and what theories we create to fill the gaps

Honestly, I think Reid’s limited physical agility will limit his effectiveness in our defensive schemes. I also feel we would take him, love to have him, and would coach around his weakness defensively.

However, with Caffaro and Shedrick, I feel like we would like to have a combo 4 - 5 rather than a 5 if Reid hadn’t been in our backyard initially.

Tony’s players usually know pretty quick that UVA is the place for them. If his normal recruits take too long he usually moves on. But this is a strange year for a couple of reasons. COVID limiting visits for one. But since TB had a stacked roster for 2021 he could aim high on some guys. These type of players often take longer to make their decisions either because they have so many great choices or because they are enjoying the process. I think TB is willing to wait because he lacks desperate needs and also the knowledge that 2022 is a deep and talented class of his type of players. So I am willing to see how it plays out even I would love to get either Keels or Warley.

If Reid is favoring Michigan now and goes that route, it seems to me to be a dice roll with low odds and very very high risk. Howard has shown no ability yet to develop players. Howard is trying to recruit already NBA ready kids. He is not having success so far (with the one top 2020 committed center player from state of VA recommitting and deciding to take another route)…in this regard, I don’t consider Hunter to be a one and done… As to Howard developing his players, year one does not indicate this ability. While Howard won some unexpected early games last year with Beilein’s talented players still there, early games are early games. Teams are trying to get their teams ready for conference play. Michigan got a couple surprise wins before teams improve and gel with more play. Michigan and Howard get over-the-top favorable pub (kind of reminds me of their football coach Harbaugh when he come on board) and soars in ranking. Then as season marches on, the Michigan team does not improve, but stagnates. They lose a lot. appear to be average Big 10 team at most and drop out of poll. This indicates that to me that the players were not developing nor getting better as a team as season progressed under Howard. Now Reid is thinking about going there over va, Thinking about going to Michigan and be behind Howard’s first recruiting class where Howard may have already promised a lot of minutes to the first incoming class. Unbelieveable! this over going to VA?

I get your argument but come on. Are we not gonna act like Michigan isn’t on the same exact level academically with UVA and has an equal if not better college town? Sitting behind one center in Hunter Dickinson probably looks better to Efton than sitting behind 2 centers at UVA and having to redshirt a year. I have a friend who trains with the same trainer who works with Efton and he told my friend that Efton says he wants to get out of Virginia for college. Do what u will with that info.

I think that appears plausible!

Michigan is listed first just because they have a 2020 slot. Sets them up to get a yes/no verdict all on their own. if I had to guess who’s in the best position with a level 2021 field, it would be Pitt. They’ve been very persistent with him through it all. Most coaches avoid these murky situations. Capel thrives in it.

sounds fairly obvious reading through here. Some kids wanna get away for school

Think we are all just getting antsy with no commits in what feels like forever. For all the reasons discussed, it’s not really concerning, but it’s been a while since we had an exciting basketball development. We are all looking for our fix.
