2021 recruiting rundown

Positional labels are whatever kids want to be called these days. Griffin is a 6’6 wing who’ll probably even play some small ball 4. I don’t know that Duke is favored for Christie so much as it just makes too much sense so everyone went ahead and predicted it.

Here’s the thing. Duke right now has 4 guards who are likely to be there in '21 including Griffin, and it’s possible none of them are there in '22. UVA has 6 guards set to return in '21 and 4 for '22. You have to look beyond just the incoming class. I doubt that matters with Keels anyway, shouldn’t. He’s getting on the court as a freshman anywhere.

I thought Harold Deane was in the class behind them. He did out play his recruiting profile.

Harold came in the next year so he was first year their 3rd years. and he sure did play out his recruiting profile and class. another story all together which we can definitely go into.

I remember that class well i was constantly lurking around my mom’s office during those years hoping one of y’all would come in and i could snag an autograph. She hated it.

But did get to meet Dean and his dad randomly on the street by her offfice. I’ll never forget how he shook hands

Great memory man. Harolds dad, coach Dean, went up and grabbed you by the wrist/ forearm. What a great guy. Harold told me he just attended an even for his dad getting an award.

Haha yup that’s it! I thought that was the coolest handshake in the world. It was was great time to be a kid growing up basically on grounds. And the access I had to all of it thanks to my mom’s job.

A few Efton Reid highlights from last night’s big win over Henry Coleman’s Trinity team.
Steward sharpshooter Zach Rosenthal was the hero, with a Kyle Guy vs Auburn like finish. His dad is a big Wahoo fan and has been very helpful letting us know when UVA coaches come around. Awesome moment for their family!

To be clear, these aren’t finalists or anything. They asked Efton who was recruiting him hardest and cranked out an edit. Just based on which head coaches I know have been regular visitors at Steward, the first three match up. UVA, Ohio State, Georgetown.

Any idea how the parents would be given a great house and this not caught by the NCAA? Is it a gift or are the parents “paid” a lot of money to do some ridiculous consulting job for a rich donor? Just trying to understand how it is so obvious they are being paid and not caught.

don’t know how it works but I do know that more than one Duke recruit has parents that stayed in nice houses while their son played basketball at Duke
Zion’s parents had a nice house in Durham last year

Efton article from StockRisers. The headline is he acknowledges the possibility of moving up to the 2020 class. First I’ve heard of that but Virginia would certainly welcome it and no doubt is on top of it. Bennett offers the reclass path to just about every early target.

Any specific reason why he does this? I don’t think I really understand the recruiting dynamics at play with reclassifying.

Well…The advantage for someone like Efton would be an extra year of college. Better development and maybe even sneak in a degree before the NBA calls. I wouldn’t read too much into it yet though. I’ve noticed a pattern of Jake bringing the reclass subject up with several recruits. Most of them at least consider it because some coach is bound to bring it up.

Oops, sorry I meant why does Bennett always offer it?

Usually it’s been to bring them in for a redshirt year. I think all that have actually done it were guys who were just rejoining their original class, like Devon Hall comes to mind. They wanted Guy to do it, ditto for Beekman. Give them a year with Curtis. Then there were different cases they didn’t get, like Walker Kessler. That would be more in-line with Efton. From a recruiting standpoint, you get him to wrap it up earlier when others maybe aren’t prepared to take him a year early when he’s less useful.

Carter Whitt article from 247. No Virginia mention. While he says he’s waiting to make a reclassification decision, his visit plans say 2020 all the way. I think Bennett took one last swing this Fall before realizing it wasn’t going to work here with Beekman on board.

Live stream of DaRon Holmes game tonight at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach. Scheduled for 7:00, but running a little late.

Personally not feeling at all disappointed about Whitt. We have Clark for 2 more years after this year and Beekman starting next year who is rated higher than Whitt…feeling we need more depth in the 2,3 and 4 positions. Usually these types of players are more versatile and can give a coach more line up options…I think we could use more recruits like Key and Dre…Keels looks like a great target!

I have always liked Whitt. I think he is a great player. I also think UVA is a perfect fit for him. He is great but his athleticism and measureables may not be perfect for NBA. However if Whitt came to UVA, he could gain those point guard skills that Coach Bennett can teach better than anyone. We could definitely use a third guard with ball handling skills (after Clark and Beekman). But with every possible loss in recruiting , there is a potential bigger win. If we lose Whitt then maybe we get Reid in a reclass to 2020. Seems to happen a lot with UVA recruiting, an apparent loss turns into a gain. We are recruiting at a higher level since winning the National championship. Certainly would be very happy with Whitt or Reid or whoever Coach Bennett gets.

Not that much of an update with in this Peyton Watson blurb, other than he’s sounding more and more like the high school version of DeAndre Hunter.

while he was expected to visit Virginia this fall, was forced to postpone such a trip. Another date is currently being worked on
