Donāt worry about me ā¦ I have no illusions about what Tony will do after his lineup choices the last 4 years.
I simply like to opine of my opinions and takes based on production, watching tape, and figuring out how to best put rotations together that fit and provide proper spacing in the modern game.
If Ralph had shooters around him all 4 years we likely have 1 or 2 more titles - or at least Final 4ās.

Yep - Sheds ā¦ still hoping he is more aggressive with his mid post faceup game next year. He can flat out shoot it from 10-18 feet.

Our offense this year has gotten pretty good (at least recently) at what we are doing, but (1) itās mostly not what weāve been doing the past three years, and (2) it may not be what we do next year.
There are many reasons Iāve never really answered Daveās question here, but one of the main ones is that Iām not really sure what Reeceās and Kadinās skills would look like in a ball screen based offense because weāve run so little of it this year.
One of the reasons I keep wishing weād see JUST ONE PG (doh, Iām yelling again) is that we canāt run ball screen well unless we have multiple shooters on the perimeter, but since weāve never done that, we donāt know really have a good idea of the skillsets we have on this team because we spent all year trying to figure out how long a butter sculpture offense can avoid melting.
Did this make any sense? Gosh, I hope not.
(rereading this, and realizing it didnāt make much sense w/r/t focusing on Reece and Kadin. Let me explain/expand:
- I think the open question wrt Kadin is how good would be be as a roll man? Any pick and pop ability? The answer to that question would dictate his centrality to the offense, and how much improvement we can reasonably expect.
- I shouldāve added Armaan. Will he be better off in a more ball screen offense? Tbh, I thought Guy was a bit of a funky fit, but he was a good enough shooter/scorer to still be useful, but how so? Wasnāt he just more a set shooter?
- I think Igor ran a lot of ball screen stuff, so it should be easy enough for him. Taine seemed to run off a lot of screens in FIBA.
- Incoming guys? Big question mark. I assume the thing I keep reading about Poca running UVaās offense/defense is referring to sides, not ball screen or three-man motion.
- And tbh, the biggest fly in the ointment is Gardner. I donāt think heās a good roll man (I believe we tried it, and it wasnāt great). He canāt pick and pop (though his pick and pop ability gets as much run as Taine and Igor ā this is more a guess back on lack of seeing it, rather than seeing it not work). So what offense works for him? [Redacted thought that would be predictable from a guy who, despite Jaydenās output here doesnāt really think he fits what we do here].
Like for example - I donāt think Gardner and Franklin and Reece belong in the same rotation especially if Sheds or Caffaro are out there too.
They just donāt fit.
Better rotations for me are:
Reece, McKneely, Milicic, Gardner, Caffaro
Reece, Franklin, Murray, Traudt, Sheds
McKneely, Franklin, Bond, Traudt, Sheds/Caffaro
Beekman, McKneely, Dunn, Bond, Traudt/Sheds - most Athletic - full court pressing and trapping lineup!!!
Might be able to get away with Reece, Gardner, Franklin with the other 2 being Traudt and any one of Milicic or Murray
No, Ralph had enough guys who could shoot. What he didnāt have was a guy like Mark West or Tim Kempton playing inside with him. Thatās the difference.

If McKneely doesnāt get time everyone remotely associated with UVA should be very down. It would mean another cycle without finding a halfway decent shooting guard. Which means another year before the program gets back to its previous level. The chart thatās been shared around here is pretty clear that guards who are any good play right away so if McKneely is going to do anything here heāll probably play 15 minutes a night next year.

I actually think the bigger Isaac should play just as much - the issue is that Gardner and Shed are roadblocks
I donāt view Gardner as a roadblock. The dude does great work in the mid-range against most teams and will likely improve as most all UVA players do. And you see his improvement on defense. Undersized, he basically dominated a dude who is likely a top 3 or 4 pick in the draft twice. No one else has done that.
Edit: and still think Traudt will get minutes. Just donāt think Bennett starts him.

I donāt think Traudt plays the 5. I think he plays the 4 (Gardner) or we go big /Caffaro-Shedrick/Traudt/Gardner. Maybe some small ball 5, or he and Igor play 5/4. Tony really will have a lot of flexibility by the time the conference schedule starts.
I was meh on Gardner early in the season as being too short and one-dimensional, much more of a game suited to a mid major prigram. I think as the season progressed he mitigated his size and maximized the one-dimensional aspect of his game, consistently producing in the 12-15 foot midrange (51%) while still drawing fouls at a very high level (around 7 FTA per game). I donāt see how heās not deserving of a starting spot - heās likely 1st team all-ACC next year. I think he becomes even more effective when paired with 2 outside threats (any of the Isaacs, Igor and Taine). So, Iām fairly hyped about him returning. Armaan is the bigger question - if we get 30% Armaan, then McKneely needs to play a lot. If we get a 37% Armaan, well thereās a lot to like in his game as he has shown he can be elite inside 15 feet and I think his defense to my eye got better over the last 1/3 of the season.

If Franklin hits 37%+ from 3 he makes an All ACC team next year. The other areas of his game are there.
