He was efficient, but only when uncontested, and rarely, if ever, off the dribble. And, a few too many of his mid-range attempts were contested. McKneely was easily the best in the mid-range, IMO.
Say what you will about ole grover, but Iām a fan. Was he the best basketball player ever? No. But he seems like a good dude, he filled a need even if not ideally, he seems like a good dude, he helped the team, he seems like a good dude, and now heās gone. and thatās how iāll always remember him until i donāt.
Iām a fan of the Groovin Groves too (obviously). Given that the offseason discussion on the board had a heavy dose of āI hope we donāt play Groves much,ā him shooting 46% on 3s and giving us some memes is a 95th percentile outcome (99th would have required him to land that poster dunk).
Of the three transfers from this year, Groves is the only one who really met or exceeded expectations. Maybe that just means that heās the only one that we had realistic expectations for? In either case, we definitely won a handful of games because of his shooting; itās hard for me to be mad at that.
It seemed like our rebounders were only using their fingernails; a lot of volleyball happening beneath the rims.
I think Groves must have had a lot of success going to the rim against our bigs in practice. Thatās what encouraged him to do it in games. Different results.
