2023 Baseball

One factor that should help Virginia in the standings is that Duke and Miami play each other next weekend in Miami. [This may have already been mentioned; if so, I apologize for repeating.] Assuming that weather doesn’t intervene and they can play the whole series, at least one of the teams will end up with 2 more losses. Unless we fall apart against GT, this should improve our chances of being one of the top four seeds.

RPI bumped to 9. May finish the day there.

And for those that don’t follow closely, ACC Tourney is 12 teams broken up into four, three team pods. Pods play round robin. Pod winner advances to semis.

In event of any ties in pods, highest seed in the tie advances. So if you’re a top four seed, you win all tiebreakers in the pod to advance to the semis where the tourney then reverts to single elimination.

Baseball America and D1 Baseball publish their Field of 64 projections on Wednesday this time of year.

Baseball America got out first today.

Hoos are the 10 seed overall and hosting in their projection. The regional would be…

  1. UVA
  2. Maryland
  3. Cal State Fullerton
  4. Pennsylvania

The winner would play the winner of the Morgantown Regional hosted by 7 overall seed West Virginia. That regional is…

  1. WVU
  2. Oregon State
  3. Texas State
  4. Kent State

This should be a free article if you want to see the entire projection…

D1 Baseball’s projections today had us as the 9th overall seed. That’s a big jump since last week when we were a regional 2 seed in their field.

Cville Regional

  1. UVA (9)
  2. ECU
  3. Northeastern
  4. Penn

Paired with Nashville

  1. Vandy (8)
  2. Indiana
  3. Arizona State
  4. Kent State

This could be a pay link, not sure.

Can confirm it’s not a pay link lol.

ECU and then Vandy doesn’t sound desirable. Better if we are the 10th seed?

I believe UVa baseball clinched 1st place in the Coastal Division last night. UVa is now 18-11, Miami 17-12, and Duke 16-12.

If UVa loses this afternoon (Saturday) and Miami beats Duke then both UVa and Miami have a 18-12 record. UVa swept their series with Miami, however; we thus hold the tiebreaker.

If UVa loses today and Duke beat Miami, then UVa would be 18-12, Duke 17-12, and Miami 17-13. We would thus be 1/2 games ahead of Duke.

With today’s sweep of Georgia Tech, the Hoos are outright Coastal Division champs.

That earns them the 2 seed in the ACC Tournament.

By virtue of being the 2 seed, UVA is the top seed in tourney Pool B.

Joining UVA in Pool B are 7 seed UNC and 11 seed Georgia Tech.

UVA went 5-1 against the pair this season with all games being play on the road.

The 2023 ACC Tournament will be played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. The tourney schedule will be released on Sunday.

UVA completed the regular season at 44-11, 19-11.

UVA’s 25-0 nonconference record was the best in the country. They’re the first D1 team to go undefeated in nonconference play since 2015 and the first in the ACC to do it since 2011.

This is UVA’s first Coastal Division title since 2011.

UVA’s 19 ACC wins are their most since 2016.

UVA’s 44 regular season wins are second most in program history. The high water make there is 45 which was achieved in 2006, 2010, 2011, and 2013.

The UVA offense assaulted the school record book during the regular season. With postseason left to play…

Kyle Teel and Ethan Anderson have tied the single season doubles record at 23 with Dan Street (2002) and Stephen Bruno (2012).

Jake Gelof has broken the single season RBI record again. Last season he set a new record at 81. He’s now sitting at 84.

Gelof has also tied the single season homer record of 22 with Brian Buchanan (1994).

Gelof owns the career home run record at 47. The previous record holder was EJ Anderson (95-98) at 37.

Gelof is now sitting at second all time in the career RBI list at 180. Steven Proscia (09-11) is the current record holder at 182.

So with this weekend’s sweep, should we host a 1st round pod no matter what happens in Durham?

Yes. We’re now in Top 8 seed territory.

We’ve got a strong case for that. Hard to know how a particular committee will elect to handle things. And there’s no ACC rep on the committee.

Last year, the committee mostly ignored conference tourney results in their deliberations.

In theory, whatever happens in Durham couldn’t hurt us. But a run to the semis or title game or championship would really solidify the Top 8 seed case.

Complete ACC tourney schedule here.

With GT and UNC playing on Tuesday before we start, we’ll know which of them we are required to beat to advance to the semis.

A guy I know on the Clemson BOV is hearing that the ACC probably can’t expect more than two national seeds. Wake is a lock — so we’d be competing with Clemson, Miami and Duke for that spot.

Good thing about the 1 seed in the pod is that a 1-1 record in the pool advances.

Miami and Duke aren’t getting top eight seeds. Miami is on the host bubble and Duke probably played itself off of that losing the series to Miami.

No more than two top eight seeds is the conventional wisdom being tossed out for the ACC but the ACC is the second best conference and the RPI number 2 conference. It’s the only conference that has a decent head to head record versus the SEC. I don’t put a lot of stock in that notion, personally.

If you look at the teams deserving of a top eight seed, it’s just SEC and ACC teams and Stanford probably. West Virginia had an argument before getting swept at home by Texas this weekend. There’s no way Indiana State gets one with a 2-9 record versus quad one teams. Coastal Carolina is the only other team in the conversation.

Not necessarily - if they lose to the UNC/GT winner, they’d finish 2nd with a 1-1 record. I don’t understand this format and order of games - it’s guaranteed that one of our games will be the pod “championship”, and the other will be meaningless.

Is there a reason why they do a 3 team round robin instead of a 3 team knock out bracket? Are they trying to have more games to help more ACC teams make the tournament?

A 3 team round robin means one game is always irrelevant, so why play it in the first place?
