Feels like Odom could do better, but maybe prefers to be in the southeast?

Is that even an upgrade??? I suppose there’s more money because of the football in the conference, but you have to have a heck of a lot of confidence in yourself to win at South Florida. Since Greenberg left in 2003 they’ve only been in the KenPom top 100 3 times, only been above .500 in the conference once with one other year at .500, have been to the NCAA one time, and have never reached a .500 record in the AAC in the 10 years of it’s existence. Their overall record has only been over .500 3 times in the last 20 years.

It’s possible they’ve just had really bad coaching hires in the past and they’re a semi-sleeping giant, I’m not sure I see it.

Ryan Odom is gonna replace CTB when he retires, isn’t he?

Lateral conferences (USF isn’t going to Big 12, is it?) but he probably would prefer to be in Florida from a personal and recruiting perspective. Maybe mbetter money, too?

If I’m USF, I’d go with Odom over Brey, too.

If I’m USF I take Odom in a heartbeat. He’d be the only ā€œhead coach on the riseā€ they’ve hired over those past 20 years. Heath was let go from Arkansas before he went there, Antigua was only an assistant prior to getting the job, and Gregory was let go at GT.

I’m just not sure it’s the job I’d go after if I was him and wanted to come back east. There has to be a better job that he would get.

Edit: McCullum had a couple decent years at Western Michigan but never got them to the NCAA’s prior to getting hired at USF

From the USF perspective: yeah, he’d be a potential home run. After seeing that list, I can understand why they’d be reticent about Brey (retread, even if a better retread). And also seeing Dusty May / FAU’s success?

From Odom’s perspective: Here are the open jobs –

The high major open jobs are Cal (graveyard), Penn St (doesn’t seem to be a candidate), and Texas (likely Terry, or splashy name).

So USF seems a pretty good option of the leftovers. Heck, those central/south Florida schools might all be power 6 within 5-10 years (FAU, FIU, USF … UCF will be next year).

Odom was one of my ā€œif tony retires tomorrowā€ candidates (along with Williford and the furman coach)

Adding to that list you already had if Tony retired tomorrow I would have Ritchie McKay and TJ Otzelberger.

I was on this train initially but this season and also how they have looked on offense have been mad suspicious. But he’s also an elite recruiter (2023 and 2024 already landed studs in both) and cut from the same cloth as Tony (both Wisconsers).

Surprised Penn State isn’t at least talking to Odom.

Or maybe they are? I dunno if PSU is being really quiet with its interviews or if I’m just totally not plugged into PSU sports and just haven’t seen it.

I’m surprised a good Power 5 has not taken a chance on J-Willy yet. Looking at the recent history of associate coaches at really good programs. Tommy Lloyd at Gonzaga now killing it at Arizona. Jerome Tang at Baylor, now 40 minutes away from a Final 4 at KSU in his first year. I don’t want J-Willy to leave and I want him to succeed CTB. I just don’t understand how some ADs don’t look at him more.

The AAC won’t be nearly as hard without Houston and Cincy (and UCF I guess). Might even be below the A10 going forward. So he’d just have to hurdle Memphis and Penny.

So I guess I’m saying it might even be a conference downgrade, but probably a job upgrade within a conference and maybe a better springboard to an East Coast P5 job.

But seriously wondering why Penn State and Temple aren’t considering him.

They might be, but I haven’t seen it (and these things tend to leak quickly)

Not having to live in Utah anymore shouldn’t be overlooked lol
