2023 Late Recruiting Cycle

Is this guy actually a take? has he committed or something?

Heavy hints btw HGN and Jacquie on 247 so eight ball says YES.

Yep, I would still like to see us add Blue Cain, but I think this roster has potential. Outside of center we’ll be taller on the starting line (and even there we didn’t always play Shedrick or Caffaro a ton of minutes). We’ll have better shooters in the starting backcourt (Franklin is a big loss, but he did disappear sometimes). Harris should provide a scoring element as a slasher, and will work pretty nicely if Dunn (please work on that shot this summer) and Groves can create space at the four. Hopefully, this team can build a bond this summer and show out next season. BTW: really, let’s add Blue to this mix to get another shooter on the roster!

Silly hypothetical for no reason whatsoever (choose one)

Option 1) Reece returns, Blue Cain gets scared off and goes elsewhere for seemingly more early pt

OR

Option 2) Reece remains in the draft, Blue Cain commits to the Hoos

Which do you prefer? There’s also a very real possibility of getting neither but let’s not talk about that.

2 is definitely happening

Great question. Do I get to choose the lineup in these scenarios?

In an ideal world One would be my preference with Harris off the bench for Reece. Give Reece the keys and pair him with shooters on the starting lineup.

But then we have to deal with some real trends… playing two true pgs. That’s where things get tricky. I don’t need to see Reece and Harris in the starting lineup together, but honestly that’s probably what would happen (the two together would probably be hell on the defensive side). So, given the realities of our recent lineups I’d rather take that choice off the table and go for Door number 2.

1… I don’t think Reece will be back, but he does have 2 years of eligibility left. Reece has a ton of untapped potential, I wouldn’t take any unproven first year over him. And, with the way things are these days, Blue may be an option down the road.

Reece has the potential to be a triple double machine surrounded by shooters.

But he also needs to be more assertive and vocal and just a better shooter himself.

Blue Cain is unproven and doesn’t have the defensive potential Reece has. But he’s a big time DAWG who can shoot really well too. Again fearless and Dawglike and confident in his offense.

The only option I really don’t like is doo doo door #3. I would prefer to get Reece back for some much needed stability (and huge talent), but Blue would be an intriguing consolation.

I don’t see how Minor, Dunn, and Buchanan get to 80 minutes.

Bigs rarely get 30 with no foul trouble and a freshman getting more than 15 would shock me. 30+30+15 is 75 and that is before fouls or injuries.

I think we need and are better off with one more big.

30+30+15 is, in fact, 75!

Actually, it is more common for a Virginia “big” to get more than 30 minutes than not. And, in those years that they don’t get 30, they get close to it. I agree that it is rare for a 1st year front court player to get extensive minutes under Coach Bennett, but, from everything I can gather, Blake Buchanan isn’t your typical frosh “big”. So, I don’t think it is an unrealistic expectation for Dunn and Minor to get just a tad more than 60 minutes between them and for Buchanan to get 15+ minutes. I think Virginia needs another C/PF, but I’m a bit skeptical of the minutes available for them, and I don’t think that we need worry about their 3 point shooting percentage. Hopefully, I am being too conservative in my estimates of Buchanan’s PT.

Yea he’s even less ready lol

It’s all moot. Groves is a 'Hoo!!! Time to do a “Happy Dance”!

Super low level competition in Idaho. So very little experience bruising with serious level players

Come on. He just practiced and played in an all star game with the best players in the country getting lots of praise from teammates and coaches. This was just weeks ago.

Not saying I totally agree, but that is the argument. He is not playing day in and day out against high level comp like you would in a large major metro area

Neither did Joe Harris :man_shrugging:
