2023 UVa Offseason Chatter

As long as he has the running lefty sky hook hoo cares about his jumper!!!

When I see off hand finishing I always replay in slow motion to break down the mechanics to see if it is mechanical or fluid … his seems fluid and the natural spin coming off fingertips seems very repeatable.

How much does it matter that his guide hand starts slightly towards the front of the ball?

No shot doc, but while the guide hand looks way too out front, the shooting hand and follow through look great.

I don’t teach it that way … I definitely like the guide hand more beside than in front … but Reggie Miller had terrible form and was an all time great … if he’s comfy with it it’s fine… as was said above, the main thing is his right hand and elbow…
I also liked my guide hand beside because whenever I was tired I used my left thumb to help propel the ball a little to get some extra range and oomph… not textbook by any means but I worked on it enough so it didn’t effect my rotation to either side of the rim. Probably game me an extra 3 or 4 feet of range whenever I needed it.

Last shot with the exxagerated dip is not ideal. But like @DavetheWave pointed out he is practicing and working on things proly

Definitely the college evolution of a push shot from 7th grade. Not sure what CTB and staff have in mind for any fixes there.

That’s interesting. I thought we had mostly given it up since the natty year. Vague memory, but I felt like we mostly went to spread ball screen in 19-20 (that is, when we ran ball screen). I forget what we ran the Hauser/Murph year. We did 5-out briefly, but gave up quickly. Did we run sides most of the year? Some spread? 21-22 was mostly sides, and then last year was heavy on the 3-man motion and then back to sides.

Looking forward to the screen article. Feels like we might have personnel well suited for it, again (he says, hopefully).

Re: Bliss’s jumper @AdventiveQuasar @DFresh11 @DavetheWave @HiltonHeadHoo – that guide hand is super weird, but is it really affecting his shot? I think he’s okay. Check out the form on this pull-up. He’s tall for a PG, gets up high, gets up quick, and has good form in his shooting hand. The weird guide hand is still there, but not as exaggerated. Also – new NBA draft buzzword - he has great deceleration.

All that said, however, my main concern with Bliss’s jumper is his concern with his own jumper. In EYBL (regular+Peach), he shot it 50 times in 23 games. That’s not very high. Boogie shot it a lot more, and even Hodge was at 5+ in the Peach Jam.

Did Bliss win games?

Jumper is not perfect or great but we are just very used to everyone shooting kinda the same. I would say his form is far from broken

Last year, we ranked 72 in Kenpom offense ranking.

This year, will we rank better? Or worse?

I’m pretty torn on this…reasonable arguments either way

It’s gonna be close. I like that Hoop Explorer gives balanced/optimistic/pessimistic projections, split out by unit:

https://hoop-explorer.com/TeamEditor?gender=Men&team=Virginia&transferMode=true%3Apredictions&year=2023%2F24&

I went better in the poll, but I think it’s might only be very slightly better. I’m super optimistic on the defense, top-10 kind of optimism. 80th on offense, 10th on defense seems very plausible to me.

I will waste some time on that for sure…

I don’t recall the NIT season (may have stricken that one from my memory) but we’ve used it in some capacity or another every other year since the natty run - just not as prominently.

0When i first started watching Bliss that form bothered me a lot. But as i kept on watching him and kept watching it go in it quit bothering me. Although on low volume he was still the guy they went to when they needed a basket. I may be wrong but if it goes in at a good percentage i have no problem. I can’t speak for Tony’s feelings about it.
If you think his jump shot looks funky you should watch his step back shot. It goes in too. So Although it’s a funky looking shot it goes in and that’s what matters

2-months out today from the first game w/ Tarleton State…

Most preseason polls have us unranked, which is fair, but where do you think UVa will be at the beginning of the ACC slate?

This was asked on several other sites, but what do you think LRA?

Mid-Season UVa Ranking

Tough call. It’s really a vote on the noncon. I think we probably drop two. One of Memphis or Florida and one of the Ft Myer’s games - probably Wisconsin. I think that would have us on the cusp, but probably unranked.

Unranked after 15 games, but just finding the accelerator and starting to mash it . . .

I just assume we will win all preseason tournaments until we lose one.

Sadly when Elijah has 4 dunks on Tarlyton State and redshirts and goes to the NBA it all changes
