So, new video of F68 dropped on YouTube about an hour ago. Part of the discussion was Goodman talking about teams he is worried about, number one being UVA. I’ll let you watch it, but pretty much a segment on our terrible roster – with very weak transfers – and challenged Dauster to name anyone on the team. Goodman said we are a NIT team and questioned whether Tony Bennett will be coaching much longer; all this with the assumption Reece comes back.
The only positive thing from Dauster was essentially that we might be better than expected if the mid-major transfers make the adjustment to the ACC well.
You can watch it – I don’t know how to embed it and don’t feel like figuring it out – but I just want to put it out there so you can hear some of what is being said.
Probably not anything we aren’t concerned about, but we are the first team Goodman mentioned as one that has concerns. And --as I said – he didn’t even entertain the idea that Reece very well might not be coming back.
What surprise me a little was Goodman’s comment that he doesn’t know if Tony will want to coach much longer.
Anyway, the discussion is in the video that interviews Bill Self.
I haven’t watched / listened. Just embedding it if anyone is interested:
My basic view is that we’ve gone off the radar of national hoops media for various reasons. We haven’t been nationally relevant in our on court results, and we haven’t been bringing in 5-stars or Hauser/Nichols/Murphy level transfers. I think we have some of the types of guys that they’ll be talking about in a year or two, but not the types of guys they’ll hype up in advance.
(also, as I said yesterday, Kansas is getting overhyped – who in that starting lineup is going in the first round? Heck, who’s even getting drafted? Only Elmarko and only if he really exceed expectations)
I mean, from the outside, he’s not wrong. Minor and Rhode are both gonna need to adjust and produce right off the bat, same goes for Harris of course but he’s played this level of comp. We’re also banking on the needed second year jumps from Dunn and iMac and Bond being able to contribute as well. Certainly a lot of ifs, but I’d bank on most of them going our way, Goodman is banking the opposite.
Shocked that Goodman is not high on the hoos.
He’s a human pendulum with all of his takes on every team. just trying to outrun the wind in whatever direction it’s blowing at any given moment.
Thank you for doing that…I am technologically challenged.
I agree. Safe to say we will likely start off the season with pretty significant challenges, and the issue will be how the team/coaching staff navigates a steep learning curve. If the new guys adjust well, I think we have a decent shot at the tournament.
I understand Goodman’s reticence, but he could have said SOMETHING positive…can’t believe it was Dauster who had a caveat.
I also don’t expect Tony to be imminently departing, but perhaps he will get fed up with the way the sport has changed.
I think an NIT appearance will leave a bad taste in many’s mouthes after the last few years but I was in the camp of being okay with back to back NIT appearances if it meant the young guys play and we build towards something.
So Im taking that same approach: me personally Im okay with the NIT if it means McKneely Dunn Bond Rohde Gertrude Buchanan get as many minutes as they can to develop the young core. I just want us to develop players. We’ve landed top 100 kids, need them to get seasoned and start playing so that they become the seasoned veterans we eventually rely on.
I’m not mad at you at all, but Goodman and Dauster don’t know dick about anything. I’m not listening to marbly mouths drooling or hateration.
Naw- to be honest we landed all of our current transfers *pretty easily which speaks to how engaged our coaches were and how the UVa brand is still strong. I really like our team actually, and of course Stupidman and Doxxer under estimates Tony Bennett’s coaching AGAIN, as they did this year when we won the ACC and got to the ACC tournament Finals.
If Kansas had the same roster as UVA, Goodman would be talking about them as a trendy contender. Lot of issues with this team and it’ll be rocky to start but Goodman doesn’t care about being partiality.
Dauster really is a hater. Last season his head was shaking “no” when Virginia was mentioned before he even knew what the comment was.
They do constantly focus on the same handful of teams in every video. Not sure how they are rationalizing any confidence at all in Kentucky.
Haven’t won a tourney game since 2019. We’re not nationally relevant right now is the reality.
Yeah but the video was about “being worried” about UVA. What is there to worry about us? We will always have a high floor due to coaching, and then it’s all about the kind of recruits we can land and develop. Tony also just landed multiple transfers (pretty easily), a very good first year class as well…it doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down…The team I would worry about is West Va- from what I understand they dont’ even have an incoming freshmen class or something like that.
Tony’s action don’t seem to indicate any kind of slowing down, ESPECIALLY with being able to recruit from the portal some guys that want to play here whenever the cupboard is bare.
True story: When we lost our lead during the National Championship game, I made a deal with the basketball devil. I said if you can allow Virginia to somehow come back and win this game, I will agree that UVA will not win another NCAA Tournament game for the next 4 years. Well, (1) National Championship and (4) seasons later of no NCAAT wins, my pact with the basketball devil is complete. This is a 100% true story and, therefore, it’s really my fault for the previous seasons of NCAAT losses. Now that the pact is completed, UVA will win a NCAAT game this year, guaranteed!!!
The worry is this from a national relevance perspective.
We’ve had 2 classes of recruits that have done anything on the national stage of relevance.
Brogdon’s group from 2013-2016 that won 6 NCAA Tourney Games.
And the 3 Amigos group 2017-2019 that won 7 NCAA Tourney games.
Before and after those amazing 2 groups there has been nothing of national relevance.
It’s why I’ve said getting to the sweet 16 is so important to keep the brand relevant to recruits and media etc…
Once the madness starts every year - nobody remembers or cares who won the ACC or SEC or Big East. And if anyone thinks it should matter - how many of you can name the regular season champs from last year in the other 5 major conferences?
You’re oversimplifying it Dave. You’re right that no one remembers one regular season title. But when you roll up multiple over a stretch people remember that
Nobody remembers or cares who went to the sweet 16. That’s not national relevance. Being in the top 10 or being a blue blood is national relevance at the time
Agreed. I don’t remember who’s made the Sweet 16, and I don’t remember who won conference tournaments or regular seasons. (I do remember Final 4s and championships.) I’d say the main thing driving my concept of national relevance is “Who seems to always be ranked.” If you’re always in the conversation, you’re relevant.
