2023 UVa Offseason Chatter

This is a pretty outdated view. It’s clear now - after seeing the careers of Carson, Taine, Igor - that Kody got run because he gave us the best chance to win. If Taine is that between he, Bond, and Gertrude, he’ll play. Most folks don’t think that’ll be the case.

In addition to lack of talent on the roster, Kody also got a lot of run because we was good on defense and a decent rebounder.. Taine is good at neither at the moment.

This love to see see Imac add that dynamic to his game. Become a complete player. Teams gonna start running him off the line so it’s time to add a wrinkle.

There’s a lot more non shooting stuff in here than I remembered. And I’m only three minutes in:

In no universe was Kody a good rebounder. Jury is still out on Taine.

Exactly! Every time he hit a shorter jumper off the dribble, I would leap for joy (not really) because, first of all, it was 2 more points for us, but mainly because it is a part of his game I was sure he has but hadn’t shown much. Being that threat to show the three but use the dribble instead will open up more threes for him.

He definitely has the skill and you’re right there are more flashes of it than I recall. Want to see him continue to develop and explore that. Imac as a creator > Imac as a shooter

Great video. Several things

Very evident that we ran stuff to free him up for the jumper (and he made them all!)
He made some nice shots at the bucket, but only remember seeing 1 or 2 medium range
jumpers. He needs that in his arsenal.
That little short kid is a good player. Wonder if he has eligibility left.

Armaan was an interesting case where his 3-point shooting percentage hurt his Effective Field Goal percentage as a junior and helped it as a senior.

Without debating the strengths/deficiencies in Kody’s game, I suspect at least some of his minutes as a SR were reward for sticking with the program as an international player, through a global pandemic.

Maybe that’s not as much a factor if we had brought in a truly special talent in the 2021 HS class, but we didn’t, and Taine/Igor weren’t significantly better than Kody enough to take those minutes.

McKneely is super athletic and didn’t get to show it a lot last year. There’s more to his game than just shooting.

This absolutely doubles as a Reece highlight vid. Drive, paint touch, kick to IMac, splash. Art.
