“Only six of 72 mid- or low-major players who transferred up averaged more points than they had the previous season”
Athletic did some article on it:

So Rohde started 31 of 31 games at his college and played 32.9 minutes per game. Shot 13.6 FGS per game and I think played a lot of PG right? 3.6 asst to 2.2 turnovers
Point being he is obviously real good at basketball BUT he got his chance there to ball all game long. No Kihei no Reece!! Or others to do much I assume
Shit he may grow 5 inches and turn into Tony Kukoc for all I know. And I hope he does at UVa.
But assuming he is better at hoops than Imac… nah man
Rohde was clearly the best on his team. He had no worries about playing time and had freedom to shoot and create against players that he must have seen as inferior at some point. Dunn and McKneely had to think about just satisfying the basic non-negotiables for Coach Bennett just to ensure some time off the bench. The situations between Rohde and Dunn/Mckneey just aren’t comparable IMO. Good chance Rohde would have been redshirted at UVA just based on the people in front of him. And I feel pretty confident that Dunn and Mick would have gone off in the Summit league once they saw how superior they were.
Agree. He is very good at basketball, but I think the St Tommies context makes it hard to know how good. iMac and Dunn were fighting for possessions against guys who will be pros this year / guy who could be making 2-way cash if he had chosen. While playing against ACC athletes in the vast majority of games. Rohde was playing mostly with guys recruited to a D-3 team who will be playing in beer leagues (or the hoops equivalent) this year. While playing against ACC caliber athletes at most a handful of times.
We know Rohde is good! The question is how good will he be at the ACC level. And I don’t suspect any of us really knows, but we shouldn’t discount the possibility that he will be just okay. And we should discount our ability to accurately predict. (also @Hooandtrue - him v ORU was a bit of the Trae Young conundrum – did he play well enough to keep his team in the game? Or did his gunning / less than ideal decision-making / inability to defend athletic guards cost his team a chance to come back? All a matter of perspective. He was 4-13 from 2, had 4 TOs to 2 assists, but he did hit some crazy 3 to make it cosmetically close)
Also, can we all agree to blame that LJ Pistons draft twitter guy for having to have this “how good will Rohde be?” chit-chat all over again?
Yea I think its really interesting. You get better by playing a lot but is it better to get better by playing with and against the best every day and waiting to really show out for a year or two
Edit: F me thats sounded like something Haney would say
I agree Rohde is very good. What I’ll be interested in is how his freedoms and confidence generated in the Summit League will translate into the Bennett system. Bennett doesn’t mind a confident shooter or passer as long as he’s taking care of business on the defensive end and not making careless mistakes on the offensive end. We all know how PT is relative to how much Bennett trusts a guy to play how Bennett sees the game being played effectively. I think Rohde will have to prove himself more to our team and coaches than to ACC competition - I suspect Rohde isn’t afraid of his opponents.
I think you’re totally right. I just have nightmares of a 1 or 2 seed first round loss, lol. With a lower seed you’re losing to a mid major school still, but it doesn’t feel as bad.
But I know in reality, if they’re good they shouldn’t lose in the 1st round either way.
6 or 7 would be ideal. Trust me, I LOVE regular season and conference tourney success. But I’d absolutely trade some of that success for OVERACHIEVING in the NCAA Tournament relative to our seed.
Well that’s probably true of almost all UVA transfers in either direction. How many total transfers in and transfers out had their best scoring season as a Hoo?
Is Hauser the only one?
Minor career vs. ACC, Big East, Big 10 and WCC teams.
8 Games
37/74 2 Point FG - 50% FG
20/32 FT’s - 63%
Per Game averages:
12.1 Points
5.5 Rebounds
1 Block
1 assist
1 Steal
2 Turnovers
Just 2023? 2 such games
14/22 FG’s (0/1 threes)
6/11 FT’s
Per game averages:
17 points
6 rebounds
3 turnovers
0 Blocks
1 Steal
1.5 assists
So you are pointing out that Minor played 2 games against those conferences (are we calling the WCC a major conference now?) and those games were against St John’s and San Francisco (neither of whom made postseason play) and he averaged same number of points and fewer rebounds vs those 2 teams than against his conference opponents?
WCC and ACC have been ranked virtually the same the last 4 years. Was better than ACC in 2021.
Just posting the data to compare … wasn’t saying it’s better or worse.
But I would say he held his own pretty well … especially considering his guard play wasn’t great and bigs rely so much on guards to be effective.
Also isn’t it fair to say that anyone on UVA gets 2/3 of their stats against non Tourney teams every year?
And we play some really crappy teams in Non-Dec every year too.
I mean most of St Thomas’ competition had to be better than last years Louisville team, right? We got to play them twice
I chortled.
Guffaw guffaw
Wait didn’t we only beat Louisville by 3?
I didn’t look closely but outside of Creighton and Oral Roberts, did either Rohde or Minor play against NCAAT teams? I’m also remembering that Oral Roberts got smacked down by Duke.
To your original point though, you basically flipped the incumbency for taking a leading team role from McNeely/Dunn to Rohde based on his stats at a low D1 school. Seems to completely ignore the relative strength of schedule as well as the roles each was asked to perform last year on their respective teams.
I’m pretty sure Rohde faced Creighton. And Minor played against Gonzaga the Chet year.
I’ll probably get banned from this board - but Dunn … agree his athleticism is off the charts. NBA material for sure. But the one skill that is paramount in the NBA is the ability to score - rarely do they chase college kids that haven’t shown a propensity to put the ball in hole. I think some might be a bit premature to think after one more season he’ll be ready to ascend to that level. While shooting can be improved upon - most start out showing a certain skill set. Remember Mamadi - most thought he’d leave early - as he had a super athletic skill set - but was raw offensively. Despite wanting to leave with one year’s eligibility remaining - he had no takers - and wisely chose to return…
I’m a huge Dunn booster and I’ve said that Mamadi-esque would be very nice for him.
