Who was the 1 and did they mean vcu?

The ā€œWestā€ was clipped off, wasn’t it?

to that point - there are probably about ~40 schools that are clear step-ups, and they don’t all have unlimited NIL. They would find it if AC had, for example, a full season where we overachieved to 6-6 and he was like 30:8 TD:INT.

then considering all of those schools won’t need/want a QB, i think we’d be okay. Sure, if FSU, Michigan, or really any SEC school decided they want him, they could find the money. But it’s not like Indiana, Maryland, or Kansas State could just look and be like ā€œwe’ll take that guyā€ and be confident they could just out-NIL us to make him want to leave.

Exactly. Teams are not going out and breaking the NIL bank on projects and prospects. They do it when they find a sure fire upgrade who is going to take their program to the next level. AC has not shown a large enough body of work for that to be the case. And to your point the schools that are on his level, sure they may be a step up from the current UVA program but none of them are massive improvements or have they shown the commitment to their programs to drop a ton of cash on a guy who might be good. They’re far more likely to bank on the the 2nd QB from Michigan or USC or wherever.

And of those 40ish schools that would represent an upgrade, where would AC even rank in the pecking order? 5’11ā€ former mid-3 star QB with 3+ games of experience showing a good arm, good mobility and really poor decision making (between the INTs and the helmet/taunting penalty). He’s definitely behind a power program former 4 or 5 star backup like Brock Vandagriff for instance.

Apparently we just lost our top recruit out of HS. The zinger is that the person who flipped the recruit is Nick Howell who is now at Vanderbilt…

Losing a recruit to academic Vanderbilt… to the coordinator who some would claim started this shitstorm (and others would say UVA is just doomed since 1819).

That’s now three decommits in the past week, with at least one more likely to come (Tyler Simmons).

I think it’s fair to say that this class has been an absolute disaster.

So what’s the argument for keeping this staff again?

I’d really wanted to staff to at least keep things together, hold the line, for one more year. That extra year could go a long way to finishing out the Ops Center and convincing the boosters to redirect the ā€œsavedā€ $2mm in buyouts to bolster our NIL offerings to a competitive level. That way, if/when a new coach is sought end of next year, we’re a more attractive program that’s on more competitive footing with our peer programs (talking the Pitt, VT, BC, Duke, Wake, NC States of the world).

All that said, the key there is Elliott doing the bare minimum un holding things together, which he’s not really doing. 1-11 with a recruiting class of single digit unranked kids basically is ā€œforced to pull the plugā€ territory. Yes, you can absolutely wait another year, but it will crush whatever shred of fan support you have left. Students and alums alike are going to find basically anything else to do on Saturdays next fall. And who’s to say that the megadonors who today are (allegedly) willing to shill out $8mm to buy Elliott out after this Thanksgiving are still emotionally invested in UVA football enough next offseason to shill out $6mm then?

It’s getting dark And it will get much worse before it gets better.

Hold on to your butts

I assume Wally is providing some proper feedback to Pres Ryan and others who want a clear view of what is going on with the program.

My argument for keeping Elliott is that it’s the middle of the season and last week was a bye and the week before that was our first win.

My argument for not firing Elliott after the season is over is that the season isn’t over and there’s no reason to make that decision now.

Said it before… this might be the least hope I’ve ever felt as a Virginia football fan, and that’s saying something

Colandrea, Robinson, Suderian, Gibson are the only glimmers.

London was still the low point for me. I stopped tuning into games the last few years. And it dragged on forever too.

We have the chance to cut bait early but that means we absolutely HAVE to nail the next hire. Has to be someone with HEAD coaching experience and who sees an opportunity to turn things around (like Bronco did). Can’t just Clemson our way to success.

Getting someone we can get excited about again (like a Bronco type coach honestly, sorry Dragon) would suck me right back in. I kind of miss the earning numbers, crazy conditioning, ā€œwe only have X ACC level playersā€ type of stuff that we saw when Bronco took over. We had a chip on our shoulder then and seeing us start to slowly turn a corner was as fun of a time as I’ve had as a fan of UVA football since the early Groh years.

London had the starting QB getting in a fight at Boyland during game week lol will be tough for anyone to top that. At least TE is finally getting our facilities from 1990’s level to early 2010’s level. But the reality is we are the new Duke in football

Bronco type doesn’t = Bronco.

I agree with everything everyone’s said. There’s no reason to cut bait right now mid season, the only time that works is if you have someone lined up that is an absolute homerun and let’s be honest that’s not the case. CTE’s measure for success for the remainder of the season is give me something to hold on to, a glimmer of hope and reason to invest. Like @JoeBoxley there are a few players who are nice but that’s not enough. The decommits have me truly worried and I’m not sure there’s much they can do on that front. A win on Saturday may be CTE’s best hope to win me back.

I fully agree with @Jerome that whoever the next man up is, it absolutely has to be a knock it out the park hire from the get go and I’m talking it needs to be a lot more than what a Huff can offer. Honestly I don’t know who that person is and feel like it’s going to have to be someone off the board. If Wally is the miracle worker that some think he is then he needs to have his full attention focused on that and locking up whoever that is.

I totally agree with almost all of this. The next coach has to have at least several years of at least G5 head coaching experience so he’s not learning how to be a head coach while on the job. Hopefully a guy who has dealt with subpar facilities and some academic limitations but still managed to succeed. A guy who has coached at multiple places and with a lot of different guys on the various staffs. A guy known for either good program management, developing players or an innovative scheme, not a guy known for recruiting. A retread who meets those qualifications wouldn’t be exciting, but would be fine with me.

If we hire a program management guy, we need a good assistant budget to get 2 experienced coordinators who know what they’re doing.

I thank Elliott for getting the new football facility funded and built and for guiding the program through last year’s tragedy and darkness, but it’s clear he’s not ready to run our program right now. Next season’s schedule does not set us up for success (subject to new ACC schedule, but Richmond, @Coastal, Maryland and @ND isn’t an OOC to help get to 6 wins), so let the next guy take first year lumps so we can make a bowl in year 2.
