Burton is a building block. Ament is a last piece. We need building blocks.

Ament also may not amaze in his one year in college. How many of those OAD lanky tall wings have been awesome?

Yup. And Ament is the better pro prospect but Im more concerned about winning as a fan of the team. College basketball is about point guard play and occasionally the dominant big man.

Burton is fantastic

If it was 10 years ago when HS kids were celebrated more, this game from Ament would have exploded all over the net and be remembered by people for decades. Only major college prospect on his team, took down the #1 team in the country.

His on-ball skills have come a LONG way in the last year. I don’t want to compare him to Durant because it’s just so unfair but he’s going to be in the same vein. Question is how well that part of his game translates in college where he won’t be given as much spacing…so hard for bigger guys to do much off the bounce in college. As an NBA prospect though, he’s special.

His frame is just way too slender and his on ball skills have come a long way but still too clunky.

Definitely a future top 5/top 10 pick. But someone who I also have questions on impact at the college level. Definitely wouldn’t take him over Burton, but Im also just all about point guards and how they make or break teams, especially after this past UVA season.

It would depend on who the coach is and what kinda system we’re running, but at first glance I’m taking Ament building a team around him and making a run at a final four. I think Burton’s skillset is easier to replicate than Ament’s in terms of what is typically available in the portal.

I think a freshman (especially a wing freshman) is better cast as a secondary option; think Stephon Castle at UConn. Somewhat narrow role as their perimeter defensive stopper/third offensive option where they didn’t rely on him as much to do more than what he was good at. The best (on-court) example of freshman-as-primary-option elite teams recently is maybe Alabama with Brandon Miller? The worst one was probably Georgia with Anthony Edwards (unreal that the team was so bad with that dude on it).

Caveat: of course if you can get an elite guy like Ament, you do it and figure out the rest as you go. There are ancillary benefits beyond just that season’s performance and overall it’s a nice problem to have.

Yeah plenty examples of teams having one and done talent but not even making the ncaa tournament.

Carmelo Anthony is still the best one and done ever at the college level imo

You could have said Burton for 1 year and most of us would have picked that too

Easy to say but the last time we had a dude like Burton was Singletary… never had one under Tony.

Durant up there too

Yeah I mean I get it. Burton is a baller, think I’m just really high on Ament lol we’ve been missing that kind of player for years too.

In this hypothetical I’m taking Ament and then hoping I can get someone like Jayden Reid in the portal.

I think I’d have taken Ament on our 14-19 teams. He’d have gotten us to another final 4, whereas Burton would not have been that additive IMO.

Ament just doesn’t make sense for us next year, IMO.

Are you assuming you know the players that will be here next year?

No he’s saying we need players to build a program around before we can truly benefit from having an ament on our team (otherwise we are a Ben Simmons LSU or Anthony Edwards Georgia team).

We don’t really have a core to build around on this roster that is really worth while

Yes. We need a lead guard. Ala Burton

Just imagine this current team with Sean Singletary … we could easily be 5-1 in the ACC…

The Athletic’s solution is to go with this hybrid comparison:

His style is a blend of Franz Wagner and Chet Holmgren, a tall playmaker with serious shooting potential who can create in a variety of ways. Ament currently operates as a bit of a power forward who can take over playmaking duties, but he also is burying spot-up 3s, leading transition and setting up pick-and-rolls to thread pocket passes. He keeps adding components to his game every few months while he continues to grow, so he may be a different player by the time he chooses a college this year.

Oh, and they did include a section on his weaknesses now:

The catch with him is twofold. He is very skinny, essentially in the opposite physical stage as Dybantsa. The difference with Holmgren at this stage was that he was aggressive and loved kicking ass. Ament is much more of a finesse player at this stage but is a good leader who elevates his teammates. And while he is building an impressive skill portfolio, there aren’t many parts of his game that are his calling card yet.

I’d say I have no confidence in our staff’s ability to properly take advantage of Ament’s skill set, but…

A) Maybe he really is special and would force our staff to adjust, and

B) Who knows what our staff, and their proclivities, will look like in a few months?

Removing Donald Hand Jr from the list. I will block his entry from JPJ if the next staff try it.

Adding Christian Anderson Jr, the oak hill pg we looked at as a late add last spring. If the Texas Tech coach takes the Texas job, Im assuming the Oak Hill coaches will serve as semi-handlers in his portal recruitment

Isaiah Coleman has 12 pts and 8 rebounds at the half vs Marquette but Seton Hall only has 21 total points at half time… he is going to 100% portal and hopefully to his home state

Also Jarin Stevenson with a nice game vs Vanderbilt but it’s still bait for a trap
