National Champs - Chervinsky and Collard
Awesome for them!
From a fan standpoint, not sure if I’m in love with the individual championships being in the fall now and separated from the team championship in the spring. Probably good from a player workload perspective, but the fan presence was pretty weak for the individual champs. Though it may be that Baylor is not exactly the best place to host the championship.
I should know this. Isn’t it indoor vs outdoor or something? Because there’s individual and team championships in the spring, too.
Chervinsky also advanced to Elite 8 in singles beating the overall #1 seed in the Sweet 16!!
Xu got to round of 32 Ziodato lost in the 1st round.
Salas and Xu lost in round of 16 in doubles.
They are testing out moving the outdoor individual championships to the Fall, started this year.
Two-year pilot, apparently.
It’d give us the opportunity to host the individual championships perhaps. We can never host the team championships due to it being the same weekend as graduation every year.
That would be cool. Though if they have to happen in mid-to-late November, it might be challenging weather-wise if they have to be outdoor championships.
Oh yeah, forgot about the weather. Good point.
Emma and Danielle win 1st round matches at Australian Open. Navarro in a 3 hr 20 m grinder.
Navarro hung tough - Stearns had her on the ropes more than once
One-time UVA commit here, destroying a forehand during the process of obliterating a top-10 player:
Was browsing the men’s tennis roster page and noticed some new things:
- Rafa Jodar is listed as being on the team with a picture and everything. I think there were some questions about whether he was gonna make it to Grounds after he won the junior US Open title.
- New addition happened in December - Jangjun Kim, who was top-20 in the junior world rankings at the end of 2024. Adds to a very strong class.
Neither Collins nor Navarro seem to care if they’re perceived as the bad guy.
That check she referred to is $290,000 for making the 3rd round
It’s remarkable how different Danielle and Emma’s personalities are, but they’re both tough as nails on the court.
Emma with another really gritty win against a former top 5 player. Down goes Collins sadly, but at least Keys stays in the fight
Emma with yet another three-set match. This time versus #9 seed Kasatkina. First two sets: 6-4, 5-7. Emma says she loves three set matches. Hopefully, that pans out again.
And she does it again! 7-5. What a match. Emma onto the next round.
