Yeah, I heard he really wanted his name on a school and creating one for him caused a bit of drama because of the overlap between what the data science school teaches and whatâs been around for ages in the Systems Engineering department.
But to tie it back to football, maybe someone can persuade him with naming rights for the head coach and/or quarterback titles?
Yeah, thatâs Jaffray. He also gave the money to build the squash center at the Boars Head and hire Mark and Grant to get the squash teams going (and he did it smart, setting up a fund to pay salaries and maintenance expenses to ensure it kept going and wasnât neglected). I donât know him well, but having been crushed by him at squash and heard him speak at some of the early tournaments, I know heâs passionate about squash and quantitative sciences. Sadly, afaik he doesnât care much about football or hoops.
Except one has 8 Super Bowl rings, 6 as head coach. About the only thing they have in common is age. Maybe it wonât work out given the whole trying to connect to people 5 decades younger but make no mistake hiring the coach with the most Super Bowl wins and second most wins in NFL history is very different from Mack Brown
Not sure how this experiment will perform but my hunch is that it will either be massively successful or a complete failure, with no room in between. Regardless, it has generated a ton of media exposure and excitement for that program, something we have failed to do. I also think there are a ton of kids who will pick UNC in the portal and out of HS based of the belief that he is a football genius who has deep NFL GM ties. Personally, Iâm jealous that UNC is taking the risk.
I forgot, did we ever talk about how Virginia is, by NCAA estimates, ranked 14th among public schools in NIL support, 2nd in the ACC to Clemson? And Iâd guess the only private schools that matter would be ND, USC and probably SMU.
Also 14th in total revenue mostly because of being 5th in fundraising behind only Texas, LSU, Georgia and Ohio State.
I dunno, maybe this is right for other schools, but it doesnât pass the sniff test to me for us.
Hard to trust a website that doesnât really indicate who is responsible for it (whois lists it as a GoDaddy domain, nothing more). Just a reference to a random CPA in Washington DC at the bottom of each page. I think the methodology is a nice try but likely quite a bit off the mark in the assumptions used.
Yeah, I read that methodology and well, itâs a decent one to take a ballpark guess, but thatâs about it.
Now, I am interested in our high ranking in contributions. Did some larger one off donations for a building or something that year? Cause I doubt our donors are really giving more to VAF than everyone except 4 schools on an annual basis especially since VAF reported only 20 mil in donations to the annual fund in 2023.
Why ainât we out spending all this money and bringing in some good players. I want sone 4 and 5star linemen on both sides of the ball. In basketball I want some athletes that are super quick, good shooters and great defenders. Canât we do that with 40 million?
