⚾ 2024 Baseball Offseason

I think the betting odds would likely favor Godbout, he’s been rock solid at 2nd but could see him moving over to SS to show MLB scouts he’s got more range. Plus I think he’s been playing short this summer so that would maybe point to him moving positions. Becker or Hanson could also move over but I think they’ll take 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Also can’t count out a 1st year coming in and taking that spot though, highly likely we don’t see Bonemer or Dickerson make it here but Jackson Sirois is a pretty highly rated prospect who we should see in orange and blue. He’s a little bit on the smaller side and might not have the biggest arm, but you could’ve said the same thing about GOF when he was coming in.

Cape Cod league tangent. Worth seeing with the fam? Got a 5 year old girl. Been going up that way for a while and thought might be worth checking out. Closest for us would be Bourne, I think

@chavlicek15 ? (And don’t pay attention to the post I just made about the Celtics,)

Go Anglers! Great fun at a Chatham game.

As an aside, UVa’s connection is usually Harwich.

Absolutely. Summer collegiate baseball is a great environment.

absolutely. i was on the cape for the first time ever last year - we stayed in Brewster and i got to catch 2 Whitecaps games, one of which vs. the team that Ethan Anderson was on (he didn’t play that game but i chatted with his dad for over an hour i’d say). I also saw braden montgomery (will be a top 10 pick from TAMU/Stanford) play, which was cool.

in general they are really family friendly - the brewster field was at a school with a huge playground, and there were kids playing around everywhere (assuming your 5 year old girl won’t watch multiple innings sitting still!).

awesome vibe for casual baseball, you will be happy you went (and very low $ commitment, so if the kid is not feeling it, it’s not like you spent $50 to take her to a game and then are leaving after 30 minutes)

JUCO transfer committed to the Hoos…

That’s a very concerning high ranking for Nunnallee.

Jumped out to me too.

Of course, McDaniel had Nic Kent is his top 250 a few years ago instead of Zack Gelof. I asked him about it and he said he thought Kent would be a better pro than Gelof. That’s not looking like a very good call at the moment. So good to keep in mind those rankings are just one person’s opinion.

I hope that Jay can sneak into the first 10 rounds and get paid a bit. Would love to see him work out some of the kinks have a shot in the minors too.

Would be great to see Jay get a nice sized bag out of the draft.

They’re laying it on a little thick in this article but seems like a solid addition. Guessing he would be DH/P mostly with some outfield if needed.

We may need him in the OF if we end up replacing our entire starting OF which seems like a good possibility.

1B & DH are other real possibilities.

Future Star Series’s final MLB draft board: MLB Draft: Final Board, Top 615 Prospects - Future Stars Series

42 : Griff O’Ferrall
48 : Caleb Bonemer (HS Commit)
57 : Bryce Meccage (HS Commit)
85 : Ethan Anderson
94 : Trey Gregory-Alford (HS Commit)
104 : Luke Dickerson (HS Commit)
113 : James Nunnallee (HS Commit)
114 : Casey Saucke
142 : Harrison Didawick
259 : Jay Woolfolk
320 : William Kirk (HS Commit)
339 : Tomas Valincius (HS Commit)
389 : Will Riley (VMI transfer)
537 : Jacob Ference

Couple observations here just based on their previous rankings, Nunnallee made a huge jump and seems to be climbing rankings very quickly in multiple places over the past couple of weeks. Am not as confident in him as I was despite the talk of having a high asking price. Kirk and Valincius are both significantly lower on this ranking than most others, though it is important to note that FSS included in their blurb that they think Kirk is gonna be difficult to sign away from us. Maybe some hope there. Will Riley our VMI transfer shows up as well, he’s a redshirt junior so I could imagine him being a fairly easy sign for a professional organization unless he’s deadset on coming here.

Woolfolk made a major jump and seems to be a consensus top 300 prospect which would land him safely in the top 10 rounds, which is great to see. Hopefully he rides his fantastic end of the year turnaround into a quality pro career. Didawick stays around the same range that he’s been listed at, would expect him to be gone as well. Ference is ranked 537th but has already announced he’ll be returning next year so should be nothing to worry about with him.

UVA portion of the D1 article…

While much of the industry was buzzing about LSU and Tennessee, Prep Baseball’s bullish forecast for the future frosh phenoms in Hooville back in November might have outpaced even the gaudiest of projections. A pair of New Jersey natives, No. 18 SS/OF Luke Dickerson (Morris Knolls HS, NJ) and No. 32 RHP Bryce Meccage (The Pennington School, NJ), refused to relinquish the helium that they enjoyed all spring in shooting up the Prep Baseball Top-100 HS Rankings. In fact, both hold strong Day One potential as they join No. 26 RHP Trey Gregory-Alford (Coronado HS, CO) and No. 41 SS Caleb Bonemer (Okemos HS, MI) with the strongest of pulls to the professional ranks.

Although Prep Baseball remains bullish on the upside that polished pitchability No. 54 LHP William Kirk (Ramsey HS, NJ) holds, his velocity never made the jump that has historically signified the cementing of Day One viability, and the gut-feel is that he will make it to the grounds in Charlottesville and enjoy the tutelage of pitching coach Drew Dickinson. At No. 87, C/OF James Nunnallee (Lightridge HS, VA) is the most intriguing of the bunch as he holds considerable upside at the plate with differing opinions within the scouting community. The same can be said for 3B Aiden Harris (PDG, VA) who, as one of the youngest players in the class with some of the biggest raw power, might intrigue certain organizations. Finally, No. 90 LHP Tomas Valincius (Baylor School, TN) enjoyed a sensational spring where he showcased one of the higher floors in the class with a real starter profile. He would be a vital asset to get to campus.

This is very much setting him up for failure, but Kirk reminds me a bit of Hultzen coming out of HS. Danny was really only 88-89 on his FB his freshman season here but the command and movement were off the charts. If Kirk does end up here and can get his velocity up to the low to mid 90’s like Hultzen was able to do over time, he’ll be very successful.
