I think recruiting is going to be tough until we see changes on offense (and it will be show not tell). As @Hooandtrue noted lots of results from this season bolstered the narrative that we are not fun team to play basketball for. The rough thing is I do think talent had a lot to do with lack of efficiency. So somehow the team will have to counter the narrative maybe without the talent to do so. Tough spot. Hope we can get some good news soon.
For me, struggling in portal recruiting is a TJ power situation. I wasnât like, OMG, we need TJ Power. I was more like, TJ power could be a nice player and itâd be awesome amazing spectacular to beat Duke for a recruit.
I donât think this was a year we needed to go portal crazy (next year might be - or get one or two big names). But I am worried about the second order concern that we are struggling (and to be clear, I was already pre-worried!)
I donât think thatâs it. But scoring 40 points in a few games will hurt youâre guard recruiting
Thereâs just something comforting and reassuring as a fan when your team/coach sets their sights on a talented player ⌠and lands them. Whether they are a high school kid or a portal veteran. That just hasnât happened very often here, and it furthers this âWe trust in Tonyâ dialogue that gets old sometimes. Maybe we land Perry and I eat my words. I would love to be wrong.
I still feel good about our HS recruiting ⌠for now ⌠(kidding; I feel good).
Teams full of mercenaries.
Im starting to see a trend that reoccurring with us over the past couple of years with recruits our insiders say we are in shape for ,If we get virginia lead or expect good news it seems to fall through. Our so call experts been missing alot more lately the people realize. Im expecting to hear Perry is scheduling another vist with the famous this one appear to be treating away from us.
Wait so are these the AAU dudes Ron is right with?
I got flamed for suggesting something similar on Tuesday after the #notcommitted.
My theory (lest someone flame me here for âspeaking in factsâ), is Tonyâs style begets a lot of integrity, honesty, directness and that itâs pretty damn hard to not reciprocate that when youâre in the moment and be swept up in it as a recruit - especially the value base type guys we bring in. So of course those that match that value based system say the right things back (and they probably believe it!).
Once you leave Grounds though - itâs back in reality. Itâs not as black and white. Especially for a kid with options. What you might not have said in front of Tony, still remains.
Spitballing here. But my point from Tuesday was more so that even the insider language changed as the days rolled on. Could just be these insiders are really optimistic and ignore the in between. Or that the difference may be that money (and bad offense) now talks louder than pillars.
Well no because sources arenât just from UVA but national sources as well.
And things do change.
London Johnson was literally going to commit until G League gave him $1.2 million. TJ Power was literally going to commit to UVA (Andrew Slater saying such) until Duke offered. Even a guy like Trilly saying he was surprised Kon picked Duke over UVA.
And information changes faster than it spreads, I donât think this is lost on anyone. If we go back and read original statements they arenât as deadset as we think; itâs just we see what we want and then assume and then run with those assumptions.
Of course UVA staff have had wrong reads on recruitment before, and leads to false information being spread. But in a case like this with Trent Perry where national sources are also aligned/ a lot of the positivity is coming from west coast sources and sources close to Perry and his school/aau
Itâs an echo chamber dude.
And if you think recruits donât play off their Virginia offer post fact, then come on!
London and TJ case to my point.
??? We offered months before Duke did. Duke offered after his 40 pt game peach jam.
We are UVA, we arenât a blue blood. Of course there is always going to be a bigger fish. not sure how relevant that is to positive news in recruitments.
And also yeah no fuckin shit its an echo chamber I donât think thatâs lost on me. Echo chamber and lost in translation/telephone. Hell I see something said on one forum and then someone goes to another forum recounting what was said on the previous forum and their recollection is far from what happened. Happens all the time and I do that too.
Sorry, meant leveraging their commitment deadline or whatever you want to call it. Not offer.
Whatâs different is that Trent Perry was committed to another school because he couldnât go to Virginia.
He always wanted to go to Virginia. Thatâs why weâre the overwhelming leader. Everyone else has backed off because they know we pretty much have him.
Could he just change his mind last second? Sure. I donât get why weâre expecting it though. Iâm giving it through the weekend before I panic. By Monday, I will no longer say we shouldnât panic lol.
I donât think Power was leveraging his commitment. he wasnât a top dog at all until that week, where he suddenly exploded to that status. May be why he hasnât lived up to the expectations associated with his rank.
London Johnson turned down both Tennesse and Auburn for UVA.
I genuinely donât think Trent Perry is leveraging UVA for anything. He could have returned to USC already (they have openings) and turned down UCLA the first time. I think heâs genuinely mulling the across the country move that both HGN and the UCLA 247 mod alluded to.
Now if you want to mention UVA struggling to close, sure.
He made 4 baskets beyond 5 feet all season.
Everything will be alright
@Hooz123 waiting in the wings for perry to commit elsewhere
