I donāt know if Virginia is deeper than last year, and I donāt think Beekmanās replacement will be as talented, initially. However, I do believe that there is more balance to next seasonās roster. At least, on paper in August, it seems so. If nothing else, there appear to be more viable options on the front line than last year. Again, on paper. It should be interesting.
Yeah but if this is true every single year, is it exclusively a player issue?
I think since the championship, between covid and the new transfer portal regs, there has been too much instability in Virginiaās basketball program. There has been a lack of continuity. There has been a dependence on too many one year or two year players. If there is a legitimate criticism of Coach Bennettās schemes itās that they require experience and talent to execute properly. There have been notable exceptions among the star players, WRT experience, but it is very true among the role players, IMO. Itās a new landscape, and it remains to be seen how well Coach Bennett can navigate through it. But I think Virginiaās struggles last year had more to do with the lack of overall talent and experience than with the systems themselves. But, thatās probably just me.
I think we had natural rebounders. Huff, Hunter, Key, Salt, Mamadi all natural effort rebounders. Since then weāve had under the basket guys like Jayden Gardner, and Jordan Minor.
Yeah, I donāt know if itās really true, but it certainly feels like a team with a bunch of above the rim guys will outrebound a team of below the rim guys. Certainly not 100% and you donāt HAVE to be a good jumper to be a good rebounder. But it feels like itād be a plus.
Just box out
So very, very true on the defensive boards. Of course, on the offensive boards itās often a question of NOT being boxed out. Some players are skilled at this, others not so much. As I recall, Key was pretty decent at not being boxed out. Some players just have a nose for it. Or, maybe, they just work harder (fighting for position) at it.
I think itāll be more like 2016 ā when 11 were in the rotation but players 10 & 11 were largely matchup dependent.
George Lynch was the best at offensive boards. Junior was pretty good too for us
But refs in Carolina dont call fouls on UNC guys after first half
YES SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM, YES
Give me this over edits 24/7
Definitely running some new stuff in the third clip.
Team 1 (no jerseys): Dai Dai, iMac, Murray, Cofie, and Blake
Team 2 (yellow): Warley/Bliss, Sharma, Saunders, Power, A-Rob
Green Team: Chase, Roberts, Zay, Lang, and a manager(?) I donāt recognize
Sideline: Rohde active.
Clip 1: Team 1 vs Green Team, Dai Dai and Blake run a pick and roll against Chase and Lang
Clip 2: Team 2 vs Team 1, Warley up top reversing the ball to the right corner (through Saunders) getting Power open off the scramble
Clip 3: Team 2 vs Team 1, ball screen reversals (first A-Rob screens for Bliss, then Saunders screens for Sharma) leads to open Saunders left corner 3.
Clip 4: Team 1 vs Green Team, Dai Dai straight line drive to the hoop off a Cofie ball screen on the right side, Zay plays zero defense in the paint.
I thought in the 3rd clip that maybe that was Bliss and not Warley. Could be wrong as itās not super clear.
Edit- pretty sure Iām wrong lol
So uh, Sharma is going to play isnāt he
Also that third set is sick. The rim running from ARob drawing eyes so that you Saunders can do the fake screen.
Eli Bennettā¦heās sort of a walk-on now, practice player anyway.
It feels likeā¦ā¦ modern basketball
Wait no that definitely is Bliss who makes the pass to Saunders in the third clip⦠You see both Bliss and Warley on the baseline in the first clip. Bliss in a white or gray shirt and Warley in an orange. Guy in white/gray shirt in the third clip made the pass to Saunders.
Yep. Always go with your first answer
