🏀 2024 Women's Basketball Season

Thats last turnover is the epitomy of brutality.

Yeah Hurd too.

We’ve got a solid core to work with but we really need a big time player at the Center spot. Most elite teams in the women’s game have multiple beasts in the frontcourt.

I think that was 43 or 44 possessions in the first half. And we scored 27 points. Woof.

It’s clear that we can’t stop Beers, or win this game, but can we see some signs of life in our halfcourt offense?

My son just came down and stole the TV to play Black Myth Wukong… better entertainment than the UVa game.

Wasn’t expecting us to keep it particularly close but the game has really gotten away from us in the 3rd.

Looks like we’ll have consecutive games with someone breaking 100

We have some pretty good players but until we get some big girls to keep the lane clean we won’t get any better

Yeah, Cam was the team’s inside warrior last year who knew how to use her size and bulldoze through smaller teams to get both rebounds and points. There were multiple games last season where they’d have a lead late, the other team would start coming back, and Cam would score on like 6 straight possessions to reassert control over the game.

Noyen is skilled and Lauterbach is comically huge (and WAY more effective than she was last year. I don’t know what she spent the summer doing, but the result is she’s actually useful this season rather than the seldom used curiosity she was last year) and Lattimore is terrific athlete, but none of them have the mass or strength to hold up against an actually good inside player.

Lattimore just doesn’t have the frame and Lauterbach would break in half if she tried. Noyen might be able to eventually, but not this year. When Cam was out last season, Brown was arguably the team’s best PF in an “Armaan Franklin is our best PF” kinda way. So, with Brown out for the season, what we expected to be the team’s biggest weakness (strong inside play) is even worse. Oh well.

But maybe the team’s trickiest problem is that O is an elite athlete with some real explosiveness who sees herself as a big, do-it-all guard and an alpha scorer. Which in theory is great, and the guys’ team could use someone like that.

But so far in college, she is an awful outside shooter (sub-28% on 3s in her college career on nearly 100 attempts), her rebounding is mediocre for her size and athleticism, and while we’d occasionally joke that Pauley was a black-hole when it came to the ball (once it was in Pauley’s hands, she wasn’t giving it up unless she was launching a 3), in reality O had fewer assists/minute than even Pauley. Also, I don’t know her at all, but I saw her play a little in HS and it really feels to me like she’s frustrated.

In theory, if she bought in, I think O could be a real inside player. She’s strong and fast, and it fits better with what she’s been good at (she’s been fine on hitting 2s) and she’s 3-4" taller than Brown who can be very effective inside. But its like “If you were a totally different person, this would work fine” and I think they’re going to struggle with what to do with her.

I haven’t followed them real closely, but I feel like every time I’ve watched the last 2+ seasons, it’s just running up and down the floor at breakneck speed and throwing up shots. I can’t figure out what they are trying to do. Feels like a pickup game. The talent level has improved for sure but I can’t tell what Mox is coaching.

They absolutely want to play fast, it’s an identity thing for them. But last night they played a team that plays even faster than them (top ten in tempo each year with that coach) but is better at it, so they looked ragged.

Bingo. Last night was a likely NIT playing an Elite 8/Final 4 caliber team. And in women’s ball the talent gap is a lot bigger and more evident. You don’t see those big upsets very often.

Great observations. I’d just add to that, the loss of London Clarkson is big too; she was the only player we had who might have had a shot at guarding Beers. Clarkson didn’t have Cam’s offensive ability but she could defend, body up, and box out. We just don’t have any bangers this year. Hopefully Doumboya (sp?) becomes that.

So FAA is the new NLI that is not binding correct? Other coaches just can’t contact her now… in theory…

Yeah I was wondering about that too. I don’t understand it. She “committed” a while back though, so it feels like this should mean she’s good?

Kids still consider signing day a big deal. Younger daughter went into school like an hour early this morning to cover signing day for school newspaper at STAB.
