🏀 2024 Women's Basketball Season

Yonta Vaughn in the game now against Radford. Glad to see she’s on the floor, though I don’t think I saw any explanation for her missing the first two games.

Edit: 2 threes for Yonta in her minutes and a sweet full court length pass to Mo for a transition 3.

Didn’t catch the first half but sounds like we’re up big but should be up even more. Turnovers still an issue, shooting the ball well to make up for it though.

Vaughns shooting well and generally a good Pg, but she’s had at least 2 passes where there was a miscommunication and she passed just as the other player took off in another direction. At least 5 travels+charges in the first half. But they’re shooting well and even more importantly, just physically dominating Radford. I haven’t looked at the stats, but the rebounding differential is probably huge.

Random point: there have been 3 tie-ups resulting in jump-balls so far, and somehow all 3 went to Radford. Not sure how that’s possible.

Ok, a 4th as I type this and it finally goes to UVA.

But then Radford got the next 2. Radford has won 5 of 6 jump balls. What is going on?

It’s also wild there’s been 6.

Defense has been very good in the 2nd half.

Hoos beat Radford 83-41. Took care of business.

Bring back jump balls in mens game. Analytics and KenPom will go haywire

I mean, they weren’t real jump balls, it was the possession arrow.

It was just wild how many there end up being and how Radford got them all.

Teams combined for 50 TOs. At first, it was like “wow, this is terrible” but after a while it was kind of impressive UVA scored 80+ points despite 20+ TOs and not especially good shooting.

Torvik rankings of our first 6 opponents:

330

No teams between 10 and 300. Closest game so far has been a 29-point margin.

Non-stop excitement!

Anyway, we take on #324 Alabama State in 20 minutes and hopefully we win by 50.

I’m watching with the sound off. They showed Noyan and Clark on the bench, are they out for the game?

Yeah, they haven’t said anything but Clark looks like she’s in a boot. Was out last game, too.

Up 49-19 at the half, which I thought was good, but apparently we won 106-21 in the last meeting (1996), so I guess there’s work to do.

Hurd faced two big free throws with 10 seconds to go. We were up 33, and Torvik had set the “line” at 34. It’s good for her to face that kind of pressure early in the season.

Hurd had a hilarious play midway through the 2Q, I think.

She got twisted up catching an errant pass, and lost her dribble but corralled the ball with her legs kinda spread out. I guess there was a damp spot on the court or something because her feet started slowly sliding apart. Alabama State didn’t have anyone on her but was blanketing everyone else. You could see Hurd’s eyes start getting wide as she couldn’t find anyone to pass to, she couldn’t take a step w/o traveling and she was getting close to doing the splits.

Finally, she made a desperation heave to Lattimore (who caught it) and fell over. She then kinda hobbled over to the corner and recuperated for the rest of the possession. Coach Mox left her in and by the end of the next possession she seemed fine, but she was pretty tentative for a minute.

Mox recording a Tony – leading Bethune-Cookman 39-14 at the half.

(It was a much more impressive 31-6 before we totally ruined it late)

They had 58 rebounds … when’s the last time the men had 58 rebounds in a game?

Well maybe the last time the other team missed 100 shots

Virtually impossible for a Tony Bennett team - not enough possessions and don’t pound offensive glass…
None of his teams ever reached 50
