VT fans are really getting their hopes up. It would be a good hire but unlikely the return the 1990s Beamer results they all think it would be. The biggest suck for me is if he gets Dex to come with as DC.

Coach brain is incredibly powerful.

More interesting scenario would be that Maryland moves on from Locksley and pays a fortune for Franklin, who has more familiarity with College Park than with Blacksburg, and College Park unlike Blacksburg is situated in the heart of the DMV, where he’s a monster recruiter.

That would be a wild scenario. MD could be a good job in the right hands. I do think Md might be in the market for a new coach at the end of the year. I have no idea what their money is like, do they still have Plank money?

Are there any examples of a coach taking a job where his longtime AHC was just fired from?

I’m starting to get nervous about the tech-Franklin thing. Getting to be a lot of smoke.

Lot of smoke for sure but could also easily just be he’s talking to their committee and hearing them out. That alone could be causing the ā€œsmokeā€ and then people running with it being imminent as the internet echo chamber revs up. I see no reason why he would want to rush a decision unless he really just wants to get a head start on roster building

Evan’s latest post is confirmation that they’re talking but again, nothing imminent. Hokies setting themselves up to be utterly devestated if this doesn’t get done. But ā€œmutual interestā€ is somewhat concerning

Frank Reich used to spend his offseason at Smith Mountain Lake. He also has ties to Arians who is on the search committee.

That’s the dark horse candidate I’m rooting for despite no other mention. Would be such a wet noodle of a hire.

Looking at this objectively, I think Franklin would be stupid to not wait a couple more weeks for some other jobs to open up. If Maryland gets blown out by IU this weekend there’s a not 0 chance Locksley gets canned after a four game losing streak, and we’re one or two more FSU losses away from them biting the bullet and eating Norvell’s buyout.

Equally true that he’d be silly not to use VT as a stalking horse.

Anybody want to summarize

It just says confirmed smoke and mutual interest… but nothing specific and nothing that is imminent. Could still possibly not happen.

Unfortunately I think the timing worked out perfectly for them and that Franklin views VT as a unique opportunity to directly recruit against PSU.

Sounds like it’s going to happen. Great get for VT, couldn’t have worked out more perfectly.

That is… really not good for us.

Also has the chance to end horribly. Since it’s VT, odds are pretty high. Going to have to constantly fight off more attractive suitors if they have any success - do we really think he views VT as a long term gig? Probably not but timing wise with realignment it’s really big for them

Oh yeah I’d put the over under at like 2.5-3.5 years for them, but I think they’ll rack up recruits and win 8+ games basically every one of those years. Especially if they get this done before end of the season.

I do worry what job he’ll be looking for as an upgrade though. Not going to get many more options than this year. And you usually only get one shot at a PSU level job. What jobs will be interested in him that he would take in a few years?

And my bear case (cope) for him at tech is that PSU was recruiting itself and he’s very coordinator dependent and won’t have access to nearly the assistants he did at PSU.
