šŸˆ 2025/26 College Football Coaching Carousel

Firing this up to clean out the College football thread because there’s a ton going on with coaching in the NCAA and I think it deserves it’s own thread.

Sounds like a messy break-up:

Multiple program sources told The Athletic earlier Sunday, on the heels of LSU’s third loss in four games, that LSU athletic director Scott Woodward wanted Kelly to make staff changes, including firing offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, to try to fix an offense that ranks last in the SEC in rushing yards per game. However, when Kelly and Woodward met Sunday afternoon, things got very tense. After Woodward told the head coach to fire his play caller, Kelly fired back that he wanted to make other staff moves Woodward wasn’t comfortable with. The situation then escalated, with the head coach pushing back hard against his boss.

I got distracted by learning that LSU has an interim president because their previous one left for…Rutgers?!

Oh and the Governor of Louisiana got involved, naturally.

Brian Kelly not going quietly? Shocked.

LSU might be the most attractive of the major jobs IMO

Guys, this is what @BDragon and I were saying a couple months back. There’s an echelon of programs we’re unlikely to reach because while we love sports, we also have other priorities in our lives. It’s a cultural thing.

I am willing to buy the idea that we (posters on this thread) ane all fanatical enough to fit in as Big Football U alums, but on the whole, we’re not. And we don’t have a state full of folks (alums or otherwise) whose happiness hinges on a Saturday outcome.

I’m old enough to remember back when Va Tech fans were delusional enough to think they were the best job opening in college football.

If you’re a upper P4 team got to think the market is gonna be $12 -13mil/yr for lsu and PSU thats a high bar. Mid levels gonna be $4-5/yr.

Hate to be a cash strapped team about now

On the other hand, It’s a great day to be Jimmy Sexton (and Lane Kiffin, Jon Sumrall, Marcus Freeman… and on and on)

Auburn is also about to come open and hell Sark might leave for the NFL. FSU maybe too.

This may be the cycle that creates some sort of movement to limit coach contracts/buyouts. The final number for money paid to guys to not coach by the end of this cycle is going to be really jarring.

Agree

The real fun part is to see who can trick their current school into paying them to stay ala- what Cig did.

Also has any coach made more off the speculation of what he could be than Lane Kiffin?

Will be interesting to see what we give Tony. Outside of this year, he hasn’t produced (and still have to see him close out this year). I don’t think he’s a current risk of being poached anywhere given track record, but salaries will be going up elsewhere.

Narduzzi got his big extension at Pitt after his ACC championship year but he also had a few years of 8 wins. Dave Doeren (who may be on the hot seat) also had prior success.

Meanwhile, seeing some newcomers to the ACC have immediate success with Fran Brown and Jake Dickert.

Marcus Freeman might.. and Cig getting an extension within 4 days of the PSU job opening was some legendary stuff.

I’m in a minority of people that genuinely enjoys Kiffin and think he’s good for the sport as a heel. I’ve spent a decent amount of time in Oxford and he is such a perfect match for that fanbase. They don’t actually care about winning the big prize that much, so I think that means he can get away with his schtick. The shirtless hot yoga photos the morning of a loss won’t play as well in Baton Rouge. I could see an argument that he’s just evolutionary Spurrier where social media is his art form and not press conferences, but I’m not sure it’ll play in Gainesville these days.

I will understand if he takes another job, but I think it will be a hell of a lot less fun for everybody.

I honestly think it depends on how the season ends. The wheels are starting to wobble and we could end up with any remaining possible win total and it wouldn’t surprise me me. 8 wins and 11 wins are different extensions I think.

I’m just very fearful of a norvell situation, and I don’t think anyone will be trying to hire him, so I hope we show some restraint.

I dont think we have to go too deep into a raise or extension for Elliot.

If some school tries to poach him just hire Al Golden

Should we fire up a standalone football carousel thread or does this one suffice? We have like 20% of the power conference jobs in the sport unfilled right now lol

Yeah that’s kinda where I’m at. Go snag Chesney.

The only realistic situation I could see someone making a run at him is if Beamer goes to Tech and SC gives him a call. Which would be annoying because then we’d be downstream of tech and I don’t want that for pride reasons.

Maybe if Key makes a move, he’d be a good fit at GT, but I don’t think that’s an upgrade over our job. Auburn if they got really far down the list? Just don’t see it. He’d be a hard sell to many of these fanbases even after a nice season.

I’m fine with him being a troll. It’s good for football to have a villain. I’m good with that.

And I generally agree Ol Miss is a good spot for Lane because you’re right he can drop the random game he always does and honestly no one wlll care. Where as LSU just fired a guy who lost 14 games in 4 years or whatever and PSU fired a guy who lost 30ish games in 12 years.

I just find it funny when you look at his actual results how poor they are compared to the hype he generates. He’s 112-53 lifetime in the college ball compared to Franklin 128-60, but one is routinely considered the next big thing and has never won a conference championship. The other was ran out of town a year after a playoff apperence.

I’m obviously a Tony homer, but I think he’s done enough ear an extension. I’m fine with it being a moderate one and given the current environment I think they can work out an extra 3ish years on at a cheaper than market rate. As someone mentioned the size of the extension depends on 8,9,10,or 11 wins.

But with the money coming in and the current performance you don’t lame duck him going into next year.
