My hot take is that nine game conference schedules are bad for particularly this reason, it makes it pretty much impossible to know for sure if one conference is better than another since they play so infrequently, and the preseason narrative just entrenches in the computer models and the discourse

Not sure if there’s data to prove (or disprove) this, but I’ve always thought at least in hoops, there are peer effects from being in a conference.
That is, teams that are used to playing each other, and play each other frequently, will play closer games due to familiarity.
So conferences artificially boost the computer rankings of the below median teams.
Like I said, no data. Just a hunch. And maybe more true in hoops.

I’m really starting to feel that many (including our own fans) may be underestimating our team. We’re UVa so I understand why people need to see us prove it (more than one season) before truly buying in but I just think this roster stacks up incredibly well against most others not just in the ACC but nationwide outside of the top half of the SEC/B1G. We honestly should be in the top 35 but again, I guess we need to earn it first.

I’m so excited for this season but trying to remain cautiously optimistic. I just love how deep we are across the board and think we are best where it matters most: the trenches. Really comes down to how effective Pribula can be, but I’m a beauliever.
Think the defense has a chance to be even better than last year.

I think it’ll come down to QB play and 1-2 Wr’s stepping up. Would have loved if wood and edrine were still around.

I think you’re right.
The big reason I’m getting high on this team is it is built from the inside out. The Oline is very good and the Dline is going to be good as well. The problem is when you build like that, it’s not sexy and is easy for people to sleep on. There’ s obviously questions, but there’s clearly a strong foundation in play.

Yep. We’ll be able to straight bully 2/3 of the teams on the schedule. That creates a pretty high floor.

Hope so! Will be nice that with Franklin coming in and us having a good season last year that this game again has some level of national relevance.

Stay healthy at key spots, don’t make a habit of turnovers. I know that’s cliche and important for everyone but I feel like many other factors look good for us so those are the biggest landmines still to avoid.
There are a couple of positions where I worry about depth. Maybe DT and LB. But high ceiling if things work out.

Considering we only play 2 LBs I think we’re relatively deep. And I’m very high on the underclassmen and from Tony’s comments it seems like he is too. It’s probably the position group we’ve recruited the best from HS the last few years. I think Rowe, Reese, Brannon, and Uran are all pretty significant recruiting wins and Brown wasn’t as highly recruited but had great film and an ideal frame. Hopefully we don’t need any of them to play big roles this years but those guys are all very talented.
And if Holmes is back I feel so much better about DT. Nice to hear DHY getting rave reviews from the staff too.
Ultimately I kinda think our floor is Mizzou last year. Our roster is weirdly similar to theirs but I think Drink is kind of a moron so hopefully we can be a bit better than they were.
