You got a year to look at these guys, watch their practice habits, off the field habits, production, it’s an awesome ability as GM in college football today to say kick rocks. It’s how we should operate.

Even NFL GMs are hamstrung by contracts, we should not be in most if not all cases.

I don’t know about individual circumstances for our players, but I think a very common NIL/Portal era phenomena is:

Agent or inner circle tells kid he is worth $500k

Kid asks current team for $500k

Current team thinks ask is ridiculous and offers $300k

Kid gets offended, enters portal, burns bridges

Kid ends up with $250k at another spot, starts over athletically and academically, may or may not be better for their football career long term

I’ve heard this story from a lot of other programs. It’s the Nico story with less public melodrama, and I think it happens all the time without the fanfare.

I’m not an expert but in Chiles’ defense, he had a very bad OL that could neither keep him upright (2nd last in the 18-team B1G in sacks allowed) nor establish the run (3rd lowest ypc in B1G play). And still MSU had a middle of the league passing attack with the leagues fewest INTs thrown. Gotta count for something.

He seemed like a solid option but not a difference maker. Good to have but not tough loss to replace.

Prefer Chiles to Lagway personally. I think Chiles would be really good with a run game and good pass protection (as would most QB’s but he has so much upside)
