Kinda tangential to this, but I think Ugo’s success with KY the latter part of his sophomore season has been a bit memory holed because of (1) Oakland (who was that shooter?), and (2) Jerome Tang.
He was the defensive stalwart starting center on a team with legit natty aspirations. I wonder if he thought about following Cal?
Jack Gohlke! Watched that game with a bunch of UK fans, it was absolutely miserable. Anyone who was surprised Cal left that offseason was clearly not around those psychos that night.
I think the Cal door might have closed a bit because Big Z was clearly going with him to be his starting center + I think K-State gave him a lot of money.
But yeah I regularly get texts from my partner’s Kentucky fan family about how unsurprising it is he’s been so good. They seemed to really believe in him in Lexington and are happy he’s succeeding.
I was bullish on him when we got him because of what I remembered of him from that last Cal UK team, he was capable of some things defensively that not many people are, even back then.
Yeah, that’s kinda why I hesitated to turn this into a Hokie thing yesterday.
I suspect lots of former players are feeling more than ever a bit slighted by their alma maters, not so much because of what they think their fellow alums are getting (or not getting) but more because the current players are basically getting paid like pros.
Clemson has Louisville, at UNC, and GT remaining regular season. I think beat GT and win their opening ACCT game (6-11 maybe?) and they’ll be in the Dance as a 7 or 8 seed. Upside obviously with a UL or UNC win or an ACCT semis appearance.
I’m sorry but eyes emoji-ing a propaganda tweet about a player for an award from a team you cover is extremely unprofessional. You work for the New York Times man.
