Agreed for regular season. Hope Odom can keep the magic in NCAAT.

I thought our end of game offensive play in regulation was supremely stupid. Not to mention the rest of our play that night.

Did you just fire up the Duke Miles signal?

Sweet 16 is the minimum expectation. Anything less is a failure, and leaves us open to criticism as an overrated team. We need to earn our top 10 ranking and (probable) 4 seed.

Nah this season is only a failure if we lose round 1 of the tourney. And even then a ā€œfailureā€ may be a stretch considering expectations coming in. 4 seeds miss the S16 all the time. 27-4 with a first year head coach is pretty hard to ruin.

The 4/5 game assuming that’s how it plays out is going to be a toss up. Saying our whole season is failure for losing that game is kinda ridiculous.

Settle down. We’ve already exceeded expectations, but 1 win would help a lot. 2 would be a home run, but you don’t need to hit a home run in year 1 of a new coach to be pretty happy.

I’m sorry but there is no world where this season is a success if we lose to a double digit seed again. I understand that it’s the first year and we’ve won a bunch of games but that’s not a successful season for anyone

It would be very disappointing, sure, but I feel like you’re bringing a lot of baggage over from the last staff that isn’t doing anyone any good.

I’m also not super worried about a first round loss this year. I think it’s super possible we lose in the second round though, and I don’t think that makes the season a failure.

Honestly I don’t think it’s really baggage- just losing in the first round to a double digit seed sucks. It’s what people remember about your season

I think it’s both. The season has already been a big success. But if we lose in the first round, it’d also be a huge disappointment.

See our 2018 season, except even more so that year.

That being said, let’s not test this proposition!

Maybe a better way to put it is that we should already feel confident in the trajectory of the program given the regular season, but for the season itself to be a success we need to win a tourney game

I agree, plus it doesn’t matter if it’s a new coach, it’s still the ā€œUva Brandā€ that would suffer.

You say ā€œagainā€ as if it’s Odom’s fault Tony lost to a handful of double-digit/lower seeds (well I guess it is Ryan’s fault in one case).

Odom has never lost to a lower seeded team in either DI or D2 and has wins over 3 higher seeded teams

I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to throw our baggage onto Odom.

It is totally unfair that Odom has our baggage, but he absolutely positively has our baggage. That’s life

Yeah if NC State, Iowa, Indiana, A&M, or Auburn win a game it doesn’t make me think they’ve suddenly had a better year or are better positioned for success in the future. Miami and Jai Lucas is the only other newly coached program who could leapfrog Odom/UVA with a stronger postseason. Obviously underperforming in the tourney would be disappointing but we’ve already done enough to make me feel very good about what Odom’s gonna do at UVA.

Would you have considered a solidly in the tournament as a 9 or 10 seed and a 1st round loss a successful season?

Before the season I was hoping to make the tournament and any tournament wins were gravy. That was a successful season. So I’m not moving the goalposts now so I can feel bad about a season I already feel good about.

So if we got up to a one seed and lost to a 16 you’d still feel good about the season?

I think the talk of baggage in this case is a bit funny because it runs both ways. Yes I’m carrying the baggage from the CTB years in the sense that I’m sensitive to double digit seed losses. At the same time, I think others are overly dismissive of postseason results, in part because it was a nice salve during the CTB years when we underperformed

We will not lose to a double-digit seed. It’s just a discussion for the masochists here.

Soft fanbase to talk about hypothetical reactions to hypothetical disaster scenarios.
