🏀 2025-26 In-Season Virginia Women's Basketball

Texted a friend this AM- anything short of s ncaa apperence and a win and Mox is out.

We’ve seen enough.

Yeah I thought she was the right hire at the time. And I thought it would work. It’s really, really hard to compete in high level women’s basketball. The parity that exists in the men’s game simply isn’t there yet, so the top 15ish teams are meaningfully better than even a top 40 team. So I could completely understand if it took Mox a long time to breakthrough and really compete for championships.

But that’s irrelevant when you’re losing to UMBC. It’s a clear sign that things are wrong. She’ll get the season to try to right the ship but the results need to be significant to keep her job.

I like Mox. I don’t blame Carla for hiring her. But it just hasn’t worked out and it’s getting close to time to move on because given the growth in the women’s game and the backing we have for the program, we can’t afford to fall behind.

The question will be whether Carla is up for firing her, and/or whether the right cabal of backers (donors like Ohanian along with influential program alums) similarly lose patience. Ohanian didn’t pledge ~$1mm/year for a team that doesn’t make the Tournament.

Add: I’m ready to see what Tammi Reiss could do with the program.

I’d prefer he just direct those funds to the men’s basketball team at this point.

I’d like to think donors would continue to commit and that if Mox fails, they’d be more likely to push for a high profile hire than they would to back out.

If anything, Mox did bring excitement back to the program - got the donors involved and proved we can bring in talent - just not the right coach for the level of program she built.

Would love to poach an accomplished P4 coach. Like we did last year for baseball.

Yeah Mox is a little like Elliot. Good person, probably the right personality for the situation at the time (Mox getting us through the dumpster fire that was Tina, Elliot helping with funding and getting through the shooting), but maybe have served their purpose for us already (although the super weak schedule is making football a lot more fun this year).

It sucks again because I want Mox to succeed. She is a good person. But being successful isn’t just about being a good person. Otherwise we would still have Mike London as our football coach

I think Mox did her job. He brought the program back from the gates of hell and made them relevant again.

She was the right hire for the time. However, given the rising tide of the athletic department on the whole, the eyeballs on the sport of women’s basketball it’s time for the program to take the next step.

The way women’s basketball works it’s still a long climb to get to the top of the mountain. But after 4(?) years and with that amount of talent it’s time to consistently beat the teams they’re supposed to beat and pick off the occasional ACC Blue Blood. Instead Virginia remains as the plucky underdog who tries hard.

In a lot of ways, she reminds me of how Pete Gillen’s teams played… and how many years did he last?

Wow… Gillen was HC for 7-years… but I can see Mox’s record looking similar after 7-years…

Pete feels like a good comp. The breaking point on the Pete era was when he started dropping those non-con games cause he frontloaded the hell out his schedule with cupcakes.

I think I washed the final two years of Pete from my memory, I don’t remember that 02-5 period at all.

Does Mox have a play called Atlanta-X @DFresh11 ? Insiders want to know. Should this go in VIP?

Yeah the similarities are pretty apparent. If only basketball had the conference schedule strength disparities that football does!

The big shame here is that we may have basically wasted Kymora’s career on crappy teams.

If we give Mox 7 years with these results its a tremendous failure for the department.

We’re not doing any other coaching searches this season and things were getting a little too dull around here!

Really took advantage of the hometown player discount there.

I don’t think we have to worry about this regime hanging around for a long time.

UMBC current coach Candice Hill is the only coach in their history without a losing record… currently 16-16 in her second year…. Make it 2 for 2 bringing in UMBC coaches???

Monica Wright raises her hand.

Edit: my memory’s bad. We were actually pretty good her last 3 years. 3rd in the ACC.

I’m not sure I’m sold on the UMBC coach currently residing in Charlottesville

Probably bc it’s Goodman but the way this tweet is worded is infuriating

Probably couldn’t pull him but Kenny Brooks please.

This is the worst part of it for me. Kymora deserves to be competing for conference titles, and making NCAAT runs. I want better for our loyal hometown player.
