Torvik ranks us at #22 to start the year (5th in the ACC):
Tbh I’ll be disappointed if we aren’t at least a borderline Top 25 team this year (i.e. “also receiving votes”). The talent is there, and so is the depth. Just a question of whether Mox can put it all together. Totally a prove-it year for her.
Has anyone heard any actual news on Sa’Myah Smith’s health? It’s been a disappointingly quiet preseason coverage-wise, even from VirginiaSports.
So this Morgan State team is awful… UVa being up 36 before halftime really isnt showing me anything. Haha!
53-17 at halftime. Morgan State is 0-10 from 3 and have at least 11 TOs… no bueno. Kymora is cooking however.
Final score 86-36. The whole month of November will be games like this.
Same starting lineup. Hurd still the first sub. Still surprisingly few minutes for Weimar (until the second half when things felt more experimental). Sa’Maya still in street clothes, was on crutches during one TO but no crutches in others.
Levy the biggest surprise for me. Great ballhandler and passer, disruptive defender with her length. Smart player. She’s gonna make it hard to take her off the court.
Gertrude was there. Saw several more of the men at the exhibition, but I guess it’s a school night.
I was gonna be sassy about the weak non-con, but the conference schedule is hard enough that T-Rank has the overall schedule ranked in the 50-60s.
It really is dreadful. Here’s Torvik’s take on our November schedule. Check out that right-hand column. Northwestern State could be a doozy.
Actually looks like we could face Nebraska in the Emerald Coast Classic (assuming we get past Northwestern State), which would be a tough matchup.

I can’t figure out why Mox can’t get players who can actually make threes in games?
Anyone?
On the plus side - the top 4 in minutes went 15/15 FTs
It’s amazing how many threes we take, given how bad we are at them.
Yeah, I just noticed that Mo went 3/9, which is fine but not great, and everyone else combined shot 20% from 3. On the bright side, they seem to be able to rebound. Anyone know what happened to Brown for her to play so few minutes?
They were only a shade below average in terms of 3P% last year. The median team 3P% in WBB last season was 31%, the median in MBB was 33.8%.
This is an absolutely worthless OOC schedule unless the goal was to spend as little as possible on buy games. I get scheduling 2 or 3 of these to get the team confidence up and be able to give everyone on the roster some game action, but 6 of them? They don’t even help the resume, just empty quad 4 wins.
Not fun for fans either.
To only partially defend it, the men have 7 cupcake home games, and the women have 8 (Howard and Winthrop in December), so not that different. But the men have a better tournament, plus Dayton and Maryland, whereas the only competitive noncon games on Mox’s schedule, home or away, are the “required” ones: the 2nd game of the Emerald Coast Classic (presumably Nebraska), and the SEC-ACC Challenge (Vandy).
Oh, also forgot the men have Ohio State in Feb, which will be cool.
The issue I see is it appears they all have the green light to chuck threes in transition… like anyone on the floor… not just Mo and the other guard… anyone. So many empty possessions where someone gets the ball 2-seconds after passing mid-court and chucks up a bad 3.
Eh, I think it’s OK to give the players some freedom to show what they can do or not do in games like these. They worked on stuff over the summer to develop new skills or improve or whatever. If they show they can’t do what they think they can do, it’s easier to rein in when the games get tougher.
True but chucking and bricking threes without a single ball reversal isn’t working on anything of value
