I believe the great philosophers The Eagles said it best:
People talkin’ about us
They got nothin’ else to do
When it all comes down
We will still come through
In the long run

Also, although I’ve said in a couple of posts on this thread that I understand the decision to prioritize football, even if that means not funding the baseball program to the fullest potential…..
The football team better be pretty f***ing good.
Nah let it rip right now. Ill fire up a live mic and we can have some bourbon and elt the thoughts fly.
Oh boy I am mentally loading this in the chamber for my TE hate train (unless we start winning games then he’s great!)
I am too.
I can understand, and maybe even begrudgingly agree with the strategy, but I certainly don’t like it.
And I think the fan base has a right to be livid if the football team isn’t dramatically better.
Edit- I also definitely don’t like it since I think we have the wrong coach but I digress
TE killed UVA baseball #bookit
Bright side…If O’Conner leaves, we might get another round of @TheKingofRugbyRoad plane tracking out of it.
If we don’t fund football will we ever have the right coach?
I don’t think it’s fair to look at this as “football expenditures have cost us a baseball coach” when men’s and women’s basketball are writing checks left and right.
We built a sports portfolio in an era without NIL that rivaled Stanford. With NIL it may not be sustainable for a public university with a midsize alumni base (that is just a tad more sports loving than an ivy)
Do we expect a decision by end of weekend or is this a Monday deal?
Yeah I totally understand it’s far more nuanced than I phrased it, was just being more general from a simplicity standpoint. I think everyone wants to eat (football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, etc….).
I do think though it’s fair to be annoyed if the football program still doesn’t perform given the amount of money that is being put into it, and the opportunity cost of that.
I think only Brian knows that. He’s in the driver seat (can’t imagine MSU pressuring him to hurry up). The longer it takes the better our sliver of a chance gets.
I don’t disagree with anything you said. But “not even a blimp on the sports radar” seems way further down than a distant 3rd imo
Basketball is in the black, but according to the VAF call I listened to, football pays for every other sport in the department (well, except for squash). Even as bad as we’ve been. So there’s just no way you can let football rot.
Let’s make sure we all understand this very important fact. Football is not taking money from baseball. If anything, baseball is taking money from football.
Football turns a profit. Baseball and every other non-rev sport loses money and are funded mainly by football money, the student activity fee and donations to the general non sport specific fund.
In the 23-24 school year, football had 55 mil in revenue and 33 mil in expenses. Baseball had 2.7 mil revenue and 6 mil expenses.
I was looking for some ratings data and found this graphic about the 2023 championships. Some of these may be outliers, because I was thinking softball had started to outdraw college baseball. And volleyball continues to gain in popularity. (It figures we aren’t even good in the non-revs that are finally becoming popular. Lol. We don’t even have gymnastics).
I could see him using this as a way to get the resources he wants/needs.
Baseball had 2.7 mil revenue and 6 mil expenses.
Might be 11 mil expenses next year
Yeah I understand that.
But doesn’t this also relate to rich people’s money rather than the money generated from UVA sports themselves? That’s the perspective I’m coming from.
That question is an authentic one by the way. I don’t have a full understanding of how this works admittedly.
Looking back at an old Andy Staples article about conference realignment, UVA (yes, us) played in 9 football games with over a million viewers from 2015 to 2021. I think that, even more than the massive ratings for the championship game, shows how much football drives the bus.
I’m really hoping we’re getting Beamered here.
