I actually hope they make the CWS and end up with all the players wanting the interim coach to get the job. We need to announce this ourselves tomorrow and get moving
Lewellen to Wake in women’s golf.
If money was raised/committed to keep him here but his intent was to leave all along, kinda makes me look at O’Connor a little differently. If the funds remain committed, that’s a different story. He wants to keep the program strong regardless. But if the money was tied to him only staying and he was bolting regardless, it could be a huge stain on how he will be viewed in the future by UVa fans.
Regardless of how/why he’s leaving, his legacy is pretty much ruined here. He’s literally the only noteworthy coach to leave UVA and he chose Starkville of all places to jump to. I doubt he’s ever welcomed back with open arms
Nah his legacy won’t be ruined. It’ll absolutely hurt his standing with UVA fans, I mean how would it not, but I think for a lot of followers of UVA baseball it’s gonna be very tough to erase the 21 years of winning and basically building this program from the ground up.
Just curious so don’t attack me lmao. Can’t blame Carla for TB but can you blame her for oak? Job is to retain coaches and you just lost a damn good one.
I also know oaks son is committed to JMU so shocked he’d leave.
Art Guepe, football, to Vanderbilt in 1952?
I don’t know the real story behind Bernadino, but I’ve read a few not so great things in the past for that sudden, oddly timed departure.
Boland left Baylor under pressure and isn’t coaching anymore. Might’ve dodged something there.
Does Bronco count?
The impressiveness of his accomplishments remains the same. But he’s essentially dead to UVA now. Unless he flames out quick and admits his mistake
Not totally. Her responsibility is to the department as a whole. I don’t think “giving O’Connor whatever he wants” aligns with those responsibilities. She’ll wear this though because at the end of the day, he left over lack of support. They clearly didn’t see eye to eye all the time as his multiple flirtations with other open jobs showed (TXAM, Texas, MSST x2).
I think people looking for one scapegoat are not being totally rational. Multiple things lead to a divorce like this.
Oh yeah, I agree what he did can never be questioned. But if he gave any indication if X was received and he would be inclined to stay only to leave, that’s a pretty shitty thing to do. To me, it all boils down to issues with the AD. And apparently she’s gonna be around a long time.
I may need 9 wins in football and a top 25 basketball season from Odom year one at this point.
What’s next? Desorbo leaves?
Maybe I’m crazy but I kinda think the band-aid has been ripped off and it would be somewhat challenging to move forward with Oak as Head Coach and act as if none of this happened. I’ll be happy if we’re somehow able to convince him to stay but it’s not like I’m going to suddenly forget he was 9 toes out the door.
Northeastern coach. Oregon coach. Wake Forest and UNC pitching coaches. Any of those 4 would be solid
Yea his legacy will absolutely remain in tact. The only way it’ll be tarnished is if UVA baseball goes back to being completely pedestrian which I highly doubt given our resources/investment. But I also doubt we’ll reach the heights of his tenure as well (interested to see who the hire is).
I think as fans we always put way more value on the sentimentality factor and it’s relevance to these coaches. This is their career. I never assume a guy is “ours” just bc he’s been here a while just like I wouldn’t assume a dude working at Microsoft to be overly loyal to them if he wanted a change/got a better offer. It’s what makes guys like Coach K, Boeheim, Bill Snyder, etc such unicorns
Bill Elias to Navy football in the 60’s, Hoot Gibson to USF basketball in the 70’s.
Are we sure the rumor is legit haha
Telling them you love them isn’t enough, you have to show them, according to a therapist.
