Out of all the coaching options who had the best studs that would come with him?
Good for proactive blocking of people at least. My goodness.
As mentioned, five more players entered the portal today to get us up to 20 total.
Eric Becker
Antonio Perrotta
Walker Buchanan
Jackson Sirois
Aiden Harris
I’m removing Tom Walter from the head coaching board. Given how our athletic department tends to handle coaching searches I think there’s a 0% chance Walter gets consideration after what he was caught saying on the broadcast last night. Would be a PR nightmare for us.
I think he was kind of a borderline candidate anyways, this just makes it easy for us.
Tough to say. Pollard would have a handful of interesting guys to bring if he could convince them, like AJ Gracia who was All-ACC second team or Henry Zatkowski who started 10 games for them on the mound as a freshman. Admittedly their lineup is mostly comprised of 3rd/4th/5th year guys so not a ton to do there, but Duke does have a REALLY good recruiting class coming in. Six top 100 players on PG.
Scott Brown from Vandy would have a couple of intriguing pitchers, biggest prize would probably be Austin Nye who started 15 games for them on the mound as a freshman. Thing with Brown is that he could have less pull overall being an assistant coach, might be able to take some of those guys but would imagine a good chunk of them are there to play for Corbin. Same with Tennessee and Elander/Vitello, I feel like we’d likely have a hard time taking any serious contributors but who knows.
With the Vols, even some of their depth pieces would be decent adds (IMO more feasible to get).
I think with both Brown and Elander the appeal would be trying to land some of the younger guys on their depth chart and also sniping a few 2025 recruits away from Vandy or Tennessee.
Is Brown just waiting for Corbin to retire? Odd that he hasn’t taken another job.
One thing I like about Pollard is that his operation is really good at mining the Ivies and lower ranks of baseball for impact players. That translates well to UVA as we’ve already established ourselves as a good destination for transfers with that same profile.
In college baseball, it seems like assistant coaches are more willing to stay in an assistant role than other sports if they are supported well.
Mac is a perfect example of that case. We paid him really well, Oak gave him a ton of autonomy, and he didn’t have to deal with any of the head coach headaches.
Yeah he does a great job of filling out his bullpen with Ivy League all stars, has had a lot of success with that strategy.
Speaking on the topic of assistant coaches, since we have a slightly more concrete list of who our candidates are: I wonder if Pollard took the job here would he be able to lure Ty Blankmeyer back to his staff from Vandy. Blankmeyer is a big time recruiter.
That would be a great rebound.
can we afford to wait on Pollard? His team has a great chance to make it to omaha
Yes.
We can definitely wait through the weekend for the Supers.
Opinions will probably vary about if Duke makes it to Omaha. But if he’s your guy and he’s willing to come, you wait in my opinion.
And making an Omaha run is the type of thing that can change the equation of a coaching search in terms of wanting to stay/being ready to leave.
If we know for a fact it’s a sure thing he’s coming here regardless, then yeah you absolutely wait it out and get the great press of poaching a coach who just made the CWS. If it’s not a sure thing, gets a little more dicey.
Just read the Chris Graham article (I know, I should know better). Hate that he is trashing BOC. I don’t love the way this has played out but I try to focus on the body of work and legacy rather than the last week or so.
Graham just wants to grab some cheap clicks based on everyone’s (and probably his) raw emotion right now.
Don’t think it’s fair to trash Oak…yet. But I also don’t have an issue with some of the questions he raises in the article.
Emotion based and kinda par for the course from him as a writer.
