⚾ 2025 Baseball Offseason

OF Cannon Murtagh committed to the Hoos as part of the 2026 class this afternoon.

Murtagh is from Tampa and plays in one of the top programs in Florida.

He’s ranked 336 in the 2026 class at Perfect Game.

Like the rest of our 2026 commits of late, he’s a flip from Duke’s class.

He’s not lying. My son went to miss st for a year and there is not :poop: to do outside of the campus. Fun as it gets on the weekend for sporting events. The food options are really bad. The weather is really bad compared to Cville. All I can say he will be fine at first but if he doesn’t Starkville can turn into a real dark place real fast. They take there sports to a whole other level.

One silver lining: 4 hours drive to NoLA

Damning with faint praise. Towns/cities inside of that mark: Biloxi, Pensacola, Baton Rouge, Gulf Shores, Mobile, and Bay St. Louis, all 3 hours and in, and all of which, outside of Bay St. Louis, I can personally attest have something, often lots, to offer. Living in a car in the parking lot of the Flora Bama bar puts you a little over 3 hours out and gives you immediate access to one of the greatest bars in the Southeast, but, regardless of proximity, that option still doesn’t feel like a good idea.

Mobile is a sneaky incredible town. Great food, good vibes, cool culture, and very pretty imo. Went for a wedding a couple years ago and was shocked how much I liked it. It kind of struck me as a combo of New Orleans and Charleston but ~half the size.

For a few years I had the state of MS as one of my clients and travelled the entire state. We were always able to find diamonds in the rough. I would add Jackson, Hattiesburg, Tupelo and Memphis to the list.

Still not the same as being 2 hours and change from DC or an hour from Richmond.

We continue to decimate Duke’s 2026 recruiting class as middle infielder Colton Guillot from Gulf Breeze, FL flips to the Hoos from Duke.

Guillot also pitched for his high school and was all state for Pensacola Catholic.

He’s currently ranked 435 in the 2026 class by Perfect Game.

Really great Hoos On podcast with coach Pollard out. He says he expects to have a roster of 42 to 44 players to starts. Talks about a lot of this year’s players.

Yeah Preston does a good job of asking questions that allow CP to break down basically the whole roster. Couple scattered notes, would recommend listening to the whole thing though:

  • Says he got to watch Aiden Harris and Antonio Perrotta take BP when Duke came to Charlottesville in March and was very impressed by both of them.
  • High praise for a bunch of pitchers from our returning roster, says Nate Bassett has been touching 96 this summer and Tommy Roldan has looked really good in bullpen sessions.
  • MASSIVE praise for LHP Max Stammel, compares him to FSU 1st rounder Jamie Arnold in terms of the expected jump and says they picture him as a potential friday night starter one day. ‘Unicorn’ changeup.
  • Says the decision of whether or not Kyle Johnson remains a two way player or sticks to pitching next season will be up to him. Compares his situation to former Duke ace Jonathan Santucci who transitioned to solely pitching his junior year. Also gives similar sentiments about Jayden Stroman, will be something to watch but that he has the talent to do both.
  • DH/1B Sam Harris has “light tower power”.
  • Also massive praise for OF Zach Jackson. Mentions he has the tools to be a day one draft pick in the future.
  • Talks about how Noah Murray is someone who probably should have gotten more AB’s this past season, but has to improve with the glove to stick at 2nd or 3rd.
  • Mentions this is the best recruiting class he’s ever brought in, multiple guys he believes could be day one/1st round draft picks. Compares Griffin Enis to Vance Honeycutt, former UNC OFer who was the Orioles 2024 1st round pick.
  • Addresses a couple of the concerns with the roster, notably the lack of returning starting pitching production and the dearth of LHP options we currently have. Competition for innings is wide open and also trying to find lefties at this stage of the portal is tricky, they’re weighing all options. Again mentions Roldan as someone who they’re excited to see.

As an Orioles fan my off topic contribution to this thread is that Honeycutt has been horrible as a professional - 43% strikeout rate!

He was a great college player. Really electric but struck out a ton then too (30% rate I think).

The comments on the LHP issues got me to looking and our transfer commit from Cal Luthern (Frank Willius) has deleted his commitment post on X and lists himself as Gonzaga baseball on his IG profile.

So we lost one there.

Preston also seemed to imply that we lost two to the draft. We know Ryan Ure signed as an undrafted free agent but assuming he wasn’t confused about Willius (not on Baseball America’s undrafted free agent signing list), that potentially backs up that Wichita State LHP Brady Owens was inbound too before getting drafted.

Pollard’s other podcast appearance from today.

Doesn’t get into the roster weeds like he did with Preston, but more general talk and gets into ACC baseball in general and his background more.

Some good stories in here.

I think we have a lot of talented”if unproven” RHP’s. If it is really a scraping the bottom of the barrel with LHP at this point why not just go with what they have? Maybe a more talented RHP will fair better against a left handed batter than a mediocre or worse LHP.

Spend 5 minutes with someone from Mobile and they’ll let you know it’s the birthplace of Mardi Gras, not New Orleans.
