Jeff White on the first day of practice. Not much news but a useful reset:

It’s a small thing but this is my favorite bit. De Ridder sounds like a good leader, and I like that tone he’s trying to set.

Ugo must have gotten a promise from a team if coach and DT are going to join him in New York.

Grünloh looks stronger.

I mean he’s definitely going to get drafted whether he’s gotten an explicit promise or not.

@crazysportsdude re your post on a closed thread about roster limits, I’ve seen several people post on other sites that the exemptions for roster limits apply to anyone on the roster before the 15-player roster limit was set and not just walk-ons. So, purportedly, we have 3 exemptions: Lang, Roberts and Gertrude. I haven’t read the exact rules but the people claiming this said that they did. We’ll see I guess if we add the Euro that some people were speculating about.

I hope that those people are incorrect about Gertrude. Quoting from the College Sports Litigation Tracker…

So, to translate, DSAs are any athlete who either:

  • Was on a Division I team during the 2024-25 Academic Year but either was cut or would have been cut due to roster limits; or,
  • Was recruited to start as a freshman in 2025-26 but whose roster spot was cut or would have been cut due to roster limits.

The implication is that Gertrude would have been cut / not offered to come back, with a 15-man roster.

Still seems vague to me, especially since Gertrude was redshirted due to injury and who’s to determine whether or not someone would be cut? Couldn’t we claim that he would have been cut? Gotta love the NCAA and their rule writing.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t just say he was at risk to get the extra spot?

Thanks coach Curtis!!!

I mean, I basically trust Odom to figure out the dynamic. But I think you weigh risking having to certify (or whatever) that someone would’ve been cut (and the ego hit implicit in that) against the sorta meh benefit of taking on another walk-on equivalent player.

I’ve probably made this a bigger deal than it needs to be**, so I’ll stop for now.

I think that he’d only go there for a top-notch Euro player.

Too lazy to look it up but does anyone remember when the Vanderbilt & Villanova scrimmages were announced last year? Hoping for something comparable this year.

Noted that from the pic in the article. Looks a bit thicker in the lower body and chest. I really believe he’s the key to a special season. Love TDR’s fire even in practice - am I crazy to think he will be 1st team all-ACC and third team AA?

Favorite line from the article. Just a great redemption story for a great guy and a wonderful, classy gesture from the coaches

Odom and assistant coach Darius Theus plan to join Onyenso at the draft next week at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

And from the picture you can tell he has upped his ball handling skills. Okay, so you can’t tell, but I bet he has

Didn’t Curtis come to UVa from the Grizz?

Yeah, he was there for 6 years as their head strength coach and was at Michigan in the interim. Had totally forgotten that
