I legitimately dislike Robert Anae as a coordinator and think he’s avg at best. But, that said he’d be an upgrade over Des.

And that’s coming from someone who hated the Bronco and staff era as much as anyone on this board.

(Please don’t bring him back!!!)

Have probably said this before, but I would classify my feelings towards Dr. Bob more as ā€˜frustrated’ than a dislike.

You have a guy with this incredible scheme, and all these intricate play designs passed down to him over the years by some of the greatest offensive minds in college football history like Lavell Edwards, Mike Leach, and Rich Rodriguez. An incredible playbook and understanding of route trees, how to utilize unique athletes in different ways. And yet it never seemed like he even remotely knew what the fuck to do with all of it.

I swear it felt like he was picking plays at random, or calling another delayed HB draw on 3rd and long just to say ā€œFuck youā€ to our fanbase. And don’t get me started on all the times we’d go into the half with 250+ yards of offense only to put up a goose egg in the 3rd quarter because Bob was too stubborn to make tweaks to his gameplan. He struggled heavily with countering adjustments made by opposing defensive coordinators, the opening scripted series was often fantastic but from there it was a crapshoot on what we’d see.

All that being said though, he was fine. The scheme made up for a lot of his downfalls, and he produced a couple of good offenses and one great one. I think he’s underrated by some and overrated by others in our fanbase tbh, I get a lot of the gripes thrown his way and trust me I have some of my own but in general you can do worse than Dr. Bob (his name is Des Kitchings).

Love that statement.

I think a part of my dislike for Anae comes from the fact that with him you can see glimpses of what could/should be and then his own stubbornness or lack of awareness kills it. I always felt like you could see the mountaintop with him but knew you’d never make it there due to self sabotage.

The difference with Des is I’m sure there isn’t a mountaintop or another gear. So he’s not failing to meet expectations, he’s just not good.

It’s why I wanted to keep around Beck as OC when Tony originally got hired. You could keep the scheme and potentially cut out the underlying stubbornness that came with Dr. Bob, there’s a chance for magic if it works out. But I guess Tony didn’t want that.

I agree on Des too. I just don’t see enough innovation in what he’s running to really expect things to get significantly better, and it’s not like the situational playcalling or understanding of game flow have really made up for all of the vanilla he’s given us. You can’t run a basic-ass spread offense here and expect to just line up and beat teams, there’s gotta be more of an identity.

Beck would have been an interesting opportunity to get the shot. But not surprising he did not given Tony’s history his comfort level is for a more ā€œtraditionalā€ spread and Des fits that.

It’s frustrating but I get why a coach would be hesitant to change their stripes going into their first opportunity. The problems pop up when you double and triple down on that.

Beck’s only hope was us making it to the Fenway Bowl and then lighting up SMU since he was subbing as playcaller for Anae who took his ball to Hawaii. It wasn’t out of the question before the entire offense got covid. Could have been a real upswell of support for him to stay. But he still probably would have bumped heads with Elliott because hiring Tony Elliott also bought his offensive philosophies. And that’s not what Beck was going to do on his own.

My kingdom for a coordinator that can generate touchdowns in the red zone though. Feels like it’s been forever since any of these dudes have mastered that skill at UVA.

I don’t fully understand what transpired here but it got me to tune in.

Illinois finding a loophole to the sub for sub rule is great… that it’s happening to the detriment of a Beamer led team makes it legendary. Go Illinois.
