🏀 ACC Men's Basketball - Week 12: 20-26 January 2025

GT about to take down VT and snap a four game losing streak.

I bring this up not because it’s a high profile game, or meaningful to the overall landscape of college basketball. I bring it up because I hate Virginia Tech.

Hokies are so bad they have literally no one on their team worth adding to my portal wishlist. Gonna make it more painful when they sweep us.

I would take Tobi Lawal so long as he keeps hitting 3’s. Maybe Tyler Johnson as an end of the bench guy with good athleticism and a chance to be a player down the line.

Other than that though, nah.

Tobi Lawal seems like a red flag. Why leave VCU for the Hokies? Something is up there

ACCT Bubble Watch

BC and Miami are near locks to miss the ACCT.

We’re still projected 16th in ACC wins on Torvik (15 make tournament), but we’re in a tight race for the 11-16 seeds, and only one of those teams will miss the ACCT

I’d put our chances of going to Charlotte at 75%-80%.

On the Bubble (only one will miss)

Cal 7.85 (holds H2H tiebreak over UVA), +1.04 after win over FSU
Georgia Tech 7.19 (home 2/8), +0.26 after win over VT
NC State 7.18 (UVA holds H2H tiebreak)
Virginia Tech 6.96 (home 2/1, away 2/15), -0.26 after loss to GT
Syracuse 6.85 (away 3/8), -0.07 after loss to Clem
----------------------
UVA 6.68

Locks to Miss the Tourney

BC 3.46 (UVA holds H2H tiebreak)
Miami 2.8 (away Wed)

So need to go 5-0 in those games against those guys?
3 of the 5 are away

We’re 82% to finish top 15 according to this new page on torvik: https://barttorvik.com/concast.php?conlimit=ACC&date=20250123

BC and Miami at roughly 10% and 5%. I don’t think it’s applying tiebreakers though, because the percentages add up to more than 15

Girlfriend is a Hokie. Makes sense. Still a redflag. Double red flag actually (letting young love dictate your life AND dating a Hokie)

… Ill add him to the portal wishlist anyways

He just had to horn in on my gig!

You’re right about it not actually calculating who makes the tourney. The “Track top:” box says “and ties” if you hover the cursor over it. Still, with the page listing everyone’s expected wins, which is all I was really doing, I’ll retire ACCT Bubble Watch until March at which point I’ll bring it back with tiebreakers if necessary.

I’m reading UNC got a 5 star big and that might mean no more hot seat for Hubert. :man_shrugging:

“Plays his freshmen” eh? Not if you’re a forward or big:
Jalen Washington - 8.3% of minutes
Dontrez Styles - 11% of minutes
Zayden High - 6.9% of minutes
James Brown - 3.9% of minutes

Lols. Ah yes, if only Hubert had a talented roster … I guess we’ll finally find out his coaching potential next season.

I do think Hubert should have one more go next season regardless - and probably would have. Him landing this kid is probably the administrations cover for giving him another season.

I would personally be thrilled to see UNC stick with Hubert for as many seasons as possible.

I know what you mean kinda, but I’d also like to see the ACC suck less

He beats us a lot more than Roy did

I kinda feel like we’d beat Roy, but then the last few years we’ve been beating ourselves and Hubert just happens to be there when it happens.

I’m going to consider Miami and BC complete toast, so 1 team among us, Cal, Cuse, VT, ND, NC State and GT won’t make it. I just wish we weren’t sitting at the bottom of that pile of sub-mediocrity. Also, I understand why they’re not doing 18, but why 15 instead of 16? 4 games instead of 3 on Tuesday would seem to make no difference and you could just keep the same 4 game time schedules for Tu-We-Th.

I really don’t like the trend that not all teams make the conference tourney.

For a while, you had a format where — no matter how badly a team’s season had gone to that point — any non-Ivy team eligible for the postseason could go on a run and theoretically win it all.

I always thought that was cool.

I’d just do all 18

9-18 play 5 games on Tuesday.
Winners play 4-8 (5 games) on Wednesday.
1-3 get double byes to QF on Thursday

Tuesday and Wednesday should be general admission like (I think) Tuesday already is. Arena is empty anyway. Even with 25 min after each game, they should take 12 hours (so noon to midnight). I’d have teams warm up mostly on a court other than the game court and cut that to 10 min between games even.

I agree with that. Every school having a chance for the NCAAT after the regular season ended no matter how they did was a good thing. Detractors say that makes the regular season meaningless and I say so what?

I wish all 18 could go but the powers that be seem opposed to starting the ACCT on Monday, playing 6 games in a row on Tuesday or splitting the Tuesday games between 2 sites. Edit: or what @rushdacote said.
