Stating the obvious, but this feels like a real good early test of where we are vs tourney-level P5 competition in actual hoops gyms.
Texas Hoos roll call: Anyone else going? Section 103 here.
Duke Miles?
I’m too lazy to check, but Shedrick is gone, right? He used up his seven seasons of eligibility or whatever?
What is our best 5 and why might it be:
Mallory
Gertrude
Lewis
DeRidder
GrĂĽnloh
And then first guard off the bench White and first 3/4 Tillis and big Ugo.
At this point do we have Hall and Thomas on the floor together or stagger their minutes?
Duke Miles
Trevor Keels
Kon Knueppel
Henry Coleman
Kadin Shedrick
And then BVP first off the bench
Good tuneup game before Dayton in Charlotte
Answer: it’s not. Nothing we’ve seen from Eli suggests he should be a starter
Yea Gertrude is 10th or 11th in the rotation on basically any measure of performance so far this year so I’ll pass
Gertrude is ~~ Marco Anthony
For whatever it’s worth according Evan Miya our best lineup this year has been
Mallory
Hall
White
De Ridder
GrĂĽnloh
But extremely small sample size (22 possessions O + D) and that’s our 3rd most used lineup.
Dayton is for real. Took BYU to the wire last night.
If you lower the threshold to 10 minimum possessions it’s
Mallory
White
Lewis
De Ridder
Onyenso
But talking about such small samples
I like the Mallory-Hall combo. I’d go with Mallory Hall Lewis TDR Grünloh
Surprisingly Dayton is only 70 when you take out preseason priors. Good game against Dayton but middling other performances.
Taking out pre season priors, Texas is 41st. Fairly balanced but slightly stronger on offense. Don’t turn it over and don’t turn other teams over. Good rebounding team. Some similarities to us, actually.
Key will be staying out of foul trouble. Texas drew 27 fouls against NC State on Wednesday and fouled out three guys including Williams
Do you mean a 3 year starter averaging 30 minutes an game?
Agreed!
Is he an all around great player right now? No.
Does he have an elite skill that 3 other guards in the rotation are lacking? Yes.
Why does Jordan Walsh or Josh Minott or Gonzalez start and/or play consistent minutes for the Celtics right now? Because they guard the other teams best non big so Brown and Pritchard and White stay fresher.

In watching so far my biggest question for these guys is this… their biggest skill the last 2 years was scoring - that’s Mallory, Thomas, White and Lewis…. And then Hall can’t shoot and is a bad defender on ball.
So how can those guys form a cohesive unit taking on roles that have never played? Why not throw Eli into a role he can play tomorrow? Heat up the opponents best guard/wing for 7-8 minutes each half - rebound, run the floor etc… as long as Hall isn’t on the floor at the same time we would have 4 other legit threats offensively… literally most NBA teams play that way right now.
100% agree, but only if he stops shooting 3s. He needs to play to his skillset, which is as more of a slasher. It would definitely be a net positive, and I would love to see it.
