Maybe a couple mezcalitas deep here, but man we got a good one in Ryan Odom.
Itās stupid but I ran into him a few times in Richmond before he came to Virginia without realizing who he was and he made an impression with how genuine he was. Amplified once I put two and two together.
Malik had two huge rebounds at the end. The rebound in traffic off the front-end missy by TDR that then created a tie up and our possession. Then the final one that sealed the game.
He made a huge play (midway second half, I think) when someone floated a pass from sideline area. The State defended went for it, but Malik moved sprinted to meet it, prevented the steal and probable bunny at the other end, and then elevated hit the jumper, made the ft since he was fouled. Maybe a 5 point turnaround.
The frustrating thing with Malik has been his inconsistency ā not just his performance, but frankly sometimes his effort, as well. And he doesnāt always make the smartest decisions. But heās also a talented guy, and heās made big plays for us throughout the season. He made a ton of them today.
Heās an absolute weapon at times. That little fade in the paint is deadly. I think itās going in every time. Heās had to be more selfless in Odomās system than any other player imo.
Late to the posting party. I wasnāt too surprised by how this game went, starting off sluggish and then settling in. I donāt think Iād consider the slow start today being due to a break, itās pretty routine to play Saturday and not again until Wednesday evening, so this wasnāt even a full 24 hours past a regular game gap. I think the issue was more about playing midday on a week day. That hasnāt been a situation weāve faced all year, even our feast week games were Friday evening and Sunday.
And then on the other end Star had a day game under their belt from yesterday, they had already adjusted. Made a lot of sense to me they came out knocking down shots and built a little lead. I was just happy to see us not get rattled and the lead balloonā¦
In the game I thought we played pretty well across the board. Sam has been great against State all year and TDR is such a steady presence. When his 3 is falling heās a really really tough matchup. And of course Ugo was a dominant force on a day where it felt like Grünloh was off from the jump. Hopefully his wrist is ok! Miami is a very physical matchup, letās just try to stay healthy in this one.
Going long but something I want to say Iāve been thinking about, I think one thing that will really serve us well in the postseason is we have 3 guards who can each take over a game. Malik and Jacari are both guys who can get theres with the ball in their hands and can win any game that theyāre on. I like Sam as a takeover guy as well because heās such a high level shooter and has just enough to get to the rim. Heās not as good with the ball in his hands as the other 2 IMO but with his height and shot heās tough to stop when heās hitting
Most teams have 1, at most 2 guys in this mold. Having 3 can really be a difference in the closing minutes of postseason games.
Wade to LSU would be so objectively funny I want it to happen. Especially after the fucking endless offseason victory laps from State fans and attention they got. Plus NCSU would be likable again. Their players have Wadeās shitty demeanor and they act like losers.
