📖 Actual college classes - what was your favorite?

Loved this class. Sounded silly but was actually an excellent intro to the conditions needed for life, how life evolves into intelligent life, potential distribution of life in the universe, etc. Got way more out of it than I would have expected when I scheduled it for my final semester fourth year.

My overall favorite class though I believe was titled something like “History of American Poverty”. I feel bad I can’t remember the professor’s name but she was great, although I think sadly left soon thereafter (she may have been an adjunct or something and got a better gig elsewhere). Talked about history of poverty, depictions of poverty in popular culture, etc.

This included talking about musical themes carried through different generations, eg Tom Joad from Woodie Guthrie to Springsteen. I emailed her after one class just to note Rage Against the Machine had also done a cover even more recently, and next class when we walked in she had RATM’s version blaring over the speakers.

Somewhat related, overheard a funny conversation around town this weekend.

Student #1: complaining that Student #2 is dragging his feet on committing to partying this weekend

Student #2: complaining about academic schedule “Business school is supposed to be about two things: 1) networking and 2) drinking”

Hadn’t thought about that fun, guaranteed A class in years. (A 7 always seemed to fit for me; I’m at my best being my own boss, but also am generally able to play & work well with others - except when they try to tell me what to do or how to do it : )

I went to a Jesuit college even though I’m not Catholic, and they required 9 credit hours of Religious Studies. Even though I grew up Christian, I’m not practicing or all that into religion in general. 2 of my favorite classes were those religious classes…one was Religions of the World, one was Native American Religious Traditions. Learned a lot, and classes I never would have normally taken as a Computer Sci major.

Math and economics. I never took any of those cupcake classes.

Glad your Jesuit college had decent options for the religious requirements. Mind did not. Took a general “world religions” class. Catholic Social Justice (the sister who taught it genuinely did not like me because I didnt try hard enough for her liking) and Black’s and the Bible which was hilarious cause it combined 10 of the 100ish black kids on campus to be taught how Christianity was important to the American black community, taught but a nun from Kansas.

The philosophy options were far better

I don’t know why this reminded me, the Jesuit thing, I guess, but Georgetown had a required class called ‘the problem of God’ which always struck me as a funny /interesting concept.

I don’t really have favorites. I always liked stuff that Herman Schwartz taught (political economy) and I liked the two Con Law classes I took. Who taught them? Something O’Brien?

Like, check out this bio. What’s he even talking about? He’s at least entertaining himself… He would start every one of his classes (the beginning of every semester) by holding up a red plastic fish and a blue plastic fish and saying “One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. Any questions?” and then smiling to himself like he had just done some sort of pedagogical jujitsu… Fucking weirdo. I loved him. Ha ha!

Sounds like a religion class. Did they show examples where that actually happens ?
